I remember using the app during setup, but it's not required to operate it. I haven't had the app installed on my phone for over a year now and I can still use mine just fine. Never used the app at all actually.
These cameras require you to install an app on your phone and give excessive privacy permissions to DJI (for data mining your personal info). If that's something you care about, read the reviews on Amazon. If not, this is a decent deal.
This has become so common now that I've reverted to using my old previous phone as my go-to for shady/infrequently used apps like this. I have a throwaway Gmail on it, zero personal info nor social media accounts (not that I use any), and connect to my guest WiFi.

It sounds cumbersome, but it's actually pretty neat to have a separate phone for things like this. Your main phone's battery is spared. You can hand the device (Osmo, drone, GoPro, etc) and phone to someone and not worry about your personal stuff being browsed through, and of course, it can phone home to China or wherever all it wants, they don't get anything of value. For full paranoia mode, power the phone all the way off when done using it, and put it in a lead-lined photo-film tote bag. (I don't do that last one personally). Share a cloud storage folder link to the throwaway Gmail account and you now have a place to upload photos that is accessible from your main devices.

Another example, I greatly distrust Zoom (though it performs superbly), yet of course, my main clients chose that as their video conferencing platform. So, fine, I use Zoom on my "shady" phone. Applause

HTH

Good price. Still waiting to see if it will go back on sale for $299 with the expansion kit included. That is the best deal to me.

Seen a couple of people using these out in the wild before, they are kind of nice, just so small.

Quick question waiting for expansion kit is worth it? May I know what you getting with expansion kit? Any new features?

The expansion kit includes wireless module, attachable controller, and an attachable mount. I got it when it went for $49.99 a couple of weeks ago on Amazon. For the wireless module alone it is worth it IMO. I went ahead and purchased the extension rod for another $49.99 afterwards because it goes perfectly with the wireless mod.

If this is your first time I would purchase this at $250, fiddle with it, return it if it is not to your taste, and when the expansion kit price drops below $50 snap one up. Maybe even get the extension rod while you're at it. You won't regret having the wireless module + extension rod set-up.
