Ongoing but unadvertised "deal" at Costco.

Back in 2018, the FDA limited the size of packaging for loperamide hydrochoride tablets [fda.gov] (generic Imodium) to encourage safe use of the drug, due its chemical structure as a synthetic opioid. This meant bulk packages of the medicine (e.g., 200-300 caplet bottles) were pulled from open store shelves, most notably at warehouse stores. This also meant it became more difficult to buy the drug at a low price.

H/T to Redditors on r/Costco [reddit.com], I learned that Costco sells 36-caplet boxes at the pharmacy counter for $1.29, no prescription necessary. You are allowed to purchase one box per day. I personally verified the price and purchase limit at the Newark, DE warehouse.

The price comes out to about 3.6¢ per caplet, far cheaper than the brand name. The next cheapest alternative I found was at BJ's Wholesale Club at $10.99 for 192 caplets (5.7¢ per caplet).

Hopefully this helps out those of us who rely on this medicine for occasional or regular use.

As someone with Crohn's Disease, I pop these like M&M's. I've been buying these at Costco since they stopped bulk buys. Trick - if you have a prescription from your doctor for a larger quantity they will let you buy a quantity rather than the single box per day.

You can use Costco Pharmacy for prescription medicines without a membership. However, I think this Loperamide HCl price may actually only be for Costco members. I'd give your local Costco Pharmacy a call and ask.

Thanks for the tip. As someone who used to have UC, I still have issues post-surgery and I also pop them like M&Ms.

Just to throw it out there.. Look into "Viberzi" It's expensive(there is a coupon to make it 30$ for 90 days from the manufacture) but it changed my life..

With Loperamide, you'll no longer need to involve your thumb. Great deal.

Hey guys - for your safety we are going to stop selling anti-diarrhea meds over 36 pills. But, Disney World, if you wanna open at the absolute worse time so far in the Coronavirus Pandemic, have at it.
Yeah GOVERNMENT! Even if we want consistency they limit it to 36 pills at a time.

Thanks. I actually have no active Crohn's after my resection 20 years ago, but a bacterial overgrowth is killing me and I don't have the self control to do a FODMAP diet. Since I have no inflammation, a biologic wouldn't help.

I wish more places sold the gel capsule version of these pills. Those ones are my favorite but I can only seem to find them at walmart
