Can someone point a nice budget knife set that won't break the bank?
Don't get a set if you want value. Start with a decent chef's knife, then add a paring knife, then others as needed (utility, bread, etc.)
Look into the Victorinox Fibrox chef's knife, usually around $30 for the 8"

Yes, or a $20 8" WInco KFP-80, available from Amazon and elsewhere. Much higher quality forged X50CrMo V15 steel, compared to these cheap stamped knives. I use the 6" version all the time, and it's nice for any price, especially at $17. I use that one and a $12 forged WInco Acero paring knife more than all my other knives combined, including my Henckels knives.
Farberware does (or at least used to) make some nicer forged knives. I have some older Farberware Pro knives that I bought at a thrift store, and they're not bad.
