Solid deal. Yes, only the exterior is copper, but it does still serve a purpose in that it is an excellent conductor of heat. It will also be lower maintenance than pure copper, which will tarnish over time. And a pure copper set would be somewhere north of $400-500.

For these two in particular, the Viking set offers heavier pans, but one of the pieces is a steamer basket/pasta insert. Also the lids on the Viking set are glass, which I personally hate but some prefer. The total set weight is about 33lb.

The Calphalon set has metal lids and is cheaper, but has lighter pans. Total set weight about 24lb.

I'd say both are solid deals and would be a nice step up from big box store brands like T-Fal, but don't expect All Clad quality out of either one.
The copper on these sets is usually a very thin layer that's plated on. It will start to come off after the first few uses

Side note: neither of these sets seems to be induction-compatible since only the interior layer is steel and neither copper (exterior) or aluminum (center layer) is magnetic.

Have had these for 2 years now. The copper does not come off after a few uses. Works great with induction stoves as well.

I don't think you have the same ones. These two posted cookware sets are not compatible with induction stoves.

I have a saucepan from the Calphalon Tri-Ply Copper series, this is a good price for very basic cookware. At least it's not straight gauge stainless steel, there's a thin layer of aluminum to help even out the heat a little bit but it's far thinner than All-Clad D3 (as a reference point) and it's made in China so the steel is of lower quality. Ignore the copper, that's so thin it doesn't do anything, in fact you're better off without it as it will tarnish and it's not worth the effort to maintain. IMO, get this only if you're on an extreme budget and must buy a cookware set, otherwise invest in better pieces that you will want to keep for much longer.
