I use to be an intermediate yo-yologist. No joke. These things are hard to work with outside of "sleep". They can be squished and break over time (just the tendency to beat them up naturally by squeezing the ends). The butterfly as I recall hard to throw the momentum down. For $3, I would rather spend $10-$15 for a decent yoyo. The new movement seems to be yo-yo that can sleep for minutes while they perform string tricks.

I do miss the day when wooden yo-yos were the thing in Chico, CA. Now its a museum or artifact.
Duncan isn't what we recall from our childhood, get the best YoYo brand around instead.

If you're looking for a great yoyo for a beginner get the YoyoFactory One
$10 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C7Z0FBK/

For a beginner to intermediate get the $12 Yoyofactory F.A.S.T 201
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HPVW56F/
*you can adjust it to 3 different levels of control

Very good yoyo's for kids to adults
I have this one .. not worth it

These were so popular when I was a kid (and many of you). My school had a strict no yoyo policy, but when it came around time for the school to hold a fundraiser, guess what they sold? Yoyos. You had to go to the office after school and pick it up with the warning to never bring it back to school.

I'll echo the comments above. These yo-yos are garbage. They are poorly balanced, break easily, and don't spin well. Anyone using one of these for a first yo-yo will likely think yo-yos are too hard to use and give up. I've never used it, but after watching a few reviews I would recommend a YoYoFactory Whip if you're trying to keep cost down. The FAST 201 is a great yo-yo though some find the response technology (the way the yo-yo grips the string to return it to your hand) to be loud or catchy. This can easily be modified to be less obnoxious but is inherent to the design. Make sure to pick up some extra string. If you expect to use it in humid places you will probably want 100% polyester string. Have fun throwing.

Way back when I had a few yo-yos and the main Duncan was a light up model. It was neat. Mini incandescent bulbs, barely enough room for AAA batteries, and a set of little brass counterweights that would make the electrical connection when it spun.

Damn I loved that thing.
