They obviously work to cool a room, but the cost to operate is leaps and bounds beyond normal AC units. The ones with a cold air intake and a powered vent have great efficiency because there isn't negative air pressure.

The square footage figure is arbitrary and irrelevant, the only thing that matters is BTU.
The amount of money you'll save will make up for it. I had 2 of these, and couldn't figure out why they run nonstop, and the house was still hot as hell. Learned too late about negative pressure of a single vent system. Got rid of them this year and went with good old window units. Now have a nice, cool comfortable house. Wouldn't consider a single went system ever again, no matter how cheap it is. If you want to waste a lot of money and be hot, then buy this.
