Why the hell would oats have gluten anyway? Is this like gluten free water?

Probably because of the "ancient grains" piece, since some grains contain gluten, such as barley, spelt, farro.

Oats are commonly grown alongside wheat so the risk of cross contamination in traditional oatmeal is an issue. For those of us with Celiac disease who may be more sensitive to gluten (rashes, etc.) the notation of "gluten free" on oats says they have been grown and/or processed away from gluten containing grains.
