The opening at the top is tiny to put litter through, the bags are very expensive.
I swapped over to Litter Champ and it is far far better. Saves a ton more money too. Very same concept, but much better implementation then litter genie.
On the litter champ just be sure to change the screw out to stainless steel under the lid and you are gold.

I use garbage bags to refill mine. Those refills are a complete ripoff. See YT for videos explaining the process.
13 gallon bags?
Currently yes, some marked down flap ties, otherwise 8 gallon bags are perfect (just never on sale near me). I have 2 female cats. I change the bag once weekly, timing it to garbage pickup.

Thanks, I just watched a YT video on set up for this model. It is clunky, awkward to service, doesn't work like the other models at all. Definitely passing on the XL.
