For those deciding between this ER4SR and the ER4XR, you can read a comparison here (summary: "SR stands for Studio Reference and XR for Extended Response...the only difference between the two lies in their frequency-response curves. The SR is close to Etymotic's original response curve for the ER4 while the XR has a subtle and intentional lift to its bass response"). -StrawMan86

no active noise isolation, but if you use proper tips, it should give you very good isolation. i prefer memory foam tips.

These are like earplugs. They do block out a lot of sound.

Yup, as mentioned by the comment above me, comparable to standard consumer earplugs. If I keep my Etys plugged in without music playing, they work as earplugs. YMMV depending on your solution though. You should have OEM and after market options with many types of silicone and foam tips. There should be compatibility with custom fitted (ie professional style) mouldings too.

My usual disclaimer: Always be careful with listening volume. Tinnitus sucks.

I remember buying their ear plugs over a decade ago and hated them with a passion. They did not deliver any of their claims beyond reducing sound pressure levels. Very uncomfortable and their "high-fidelity" sound was worse than disposable ear plugs. Hopefully they have made some advances since then.

I've ridden many miles with my er4p's in my ears. I still prefer my er6's but they were so delicate but they didn't stick out as far and so they tended (past tense because they're kinda shot) to not hit my helmet. As was mentioned above, long rides seem to be better with the foam (eg Comply) tips but I have earplugs/IEM headphones in my ears a LOT so I'm kinda used to them. Not everyone handles hours and hours with them in.

Point is: I really like my ER4P's I first bought them in 2003 (with a 20GB ipod) and Etymotic did have to do some kind of service on them (I think they just sent me a new pair) in maybe 2006 or so? Otherwise, they've been well worth every penny I spent on them. My use case for them sounds like a bad movie, but I always have them in on planes, trains, and motorcycles.

this brand has the best noise isolation you will find. Actually more insulation than regular earplugs if you use the right tips

Etymotic is a well respected ear research and science company. They have been in business for decades. They make hearing aids. These ER4SR earphones are practically the same as the original ER4S that came out in 1991 with some minor iterations. These are fine for your ears provided you're careful and conscious. These earphones are very good and accurate. They're almost like science tools.

I have a pair of old Etymotics and love them! However, I need something wireless. Question: do you know any TWS headphones that come with similar eartips shape?

I haven't tried Etymotic earphones but my experience with their ear plugs was much more positive. Of course the ones I've used don't fit (or cost) like custom-fitted plugs you can get through an audiologist, but I did find them to be more comfortable than some other cheap brands. I had no trouble wearing them at concerts, including multiple festival shows over a weekend, and they made for a better overall listening experience. I preferred their sound to the 3-4 other sub-$30 brands I tried.
