Toy has a sharp metal hook that can damage both pets and people it seems; especially eyes. After reading the reviews I decided to give this a hard pass; simply not worth the risk...
We've had numerous of these for years and have not once encountered a sharp hook. I actually have one in my hand and can't figure out how there might be one... I suppose if it was really worn out and the paper pieces were destroyed. But I've always tossed them before they got to that point.

My biggest complaint about this product is that they've been too tightly wound to accommodate the packaging which caused them to be too erratic and possible to accidentally bop your cat in the face. They have addressed this by a bigger package.
My cats go nuts for these. I can see how some users are worried about the metal but becoming sharp, but it doesn't happen. I've owned maybe 5 of these and have yet to see sharp or pointy bit that could damage a(n) human /animal's eyes.

"Could" vs actually happening is different.

This thing provides ridiculous value at its regular price of $3 - I've never met a cat who doesn't love the Cat Dancer. Simple but endless entertainment.

I have seen this in the reviews as well and haven't bought because of it. No way worth the risk. Company should remedy this and then I would buy. My cats enjoy several other toys from this brand which is made in USA So A+ in my book. I buy Chinese stuff for myself but won't for my pets, especially things they will likely be chewing on.

Is... is the mouse on the packaging annoyed that the Cat is suddenly disinterested in trying to kill it?

It would seem so. Perhaps the mouse should be doing the happy dance instead lol

Exactly. I went to look at mine now and couldn't see where it would suddenly get sharp. It's wrapped around the paper pieces so tightly.

Sometimes Amazon reviews are just noise..

My experience with multiple cats and being an associate of a cat shelter as well as buying 2 of them in the past 10 years; Some cats love them , some cats completely ignore it
My cats ignore d it.
Another poster mention metal sticking out and being a safety hazard , yes.

Anyone else used to peek at Omaha the Cat Dancer comics when they were youngsters? Yeah, me neither.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the reviews are complaining about. As with most toys, animals really should be supervised while using. But honestly, we keep the two we have dangling from a cat tree. And both cats absolutely LOVE playing with them. Sure the little cardboard ties at the end are a bit chewed up, but they're like 5 years old. Never once have they nor my husband and I been injured. Though I do inspect them from time to time and move them around every now and then. (FWIW, I just purchased a third one for the new foster kittens we're getting!)

People declaw and keep cats indoors? I guess I'd worry about a little sharp toy too as my cat runs up the side of a tree before leaping down 6 foot for fun. Meow..
