Apple iTunes has several seasons of anime on sale for $5 each - Haruhi Suzumiya and Nagato Yuki-Chan are the real bargains as the shows never go on sale.
Hopefully Amazon will price match soon

You have a typical mix of characters...genki girl (or is she a tsundere?), kuuderes, aliens, little sisters, talking animals, others which dont fit any tags. It starts as a comedy, then mixes in the metaphysics/supernatural elements which usually revolve around dealing with typical schoolyard problems (sports competitions, relationships, clubs, exploring campus, etc). The episode with the computer game is my all time favorite of them. The show's most lasting legacy is the song "God Knows" which has countless covers on YT, and for good reason. Its awesome.
The most similar shows (not in plot, but in entertainment aspects ie: if you like this, youll like that) would be, not surprisingly, shows from the same studio and with a similar voice cast. Angel Beats! is an obvious one with the supernatural/school aspect. If youre talking pure comedy aspect, then FMP Fumoffu is almost a dead-ringer. All are by KyoAni, with the latter being within two years of production.
Rosario+Vampire is an absolute travesty in its anime form, which broke my heart because I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THE MANGA (One of my top 3...actually purchased it as it came out) The animation is so cheaply done, with some key frames spammed without any sort of transition. I understand that they had to finish it without source material (a-la Game of Thrones), but if you see some of the corners they cut with the second season (Capu2), youll wonder how this went into post production at all. At least the music was good.
Same sacrilege happened to another favorite ecchi series of mine, Sora no Otoshimono.

I watched all of them though, and I appreciate that every single one was animated individually. I think it's a beautiful (if slightly maddening) example of how differently animated works can play out with different "cuts" of the same/similar situation.
