If you upgrade the ssd how do you get windows on it? Will it be linked to the motherboard or do they provide some kind of activation key?

Usually the SSD drive will come with a software to duplicate the drive. I have done several SSD upgrades on many of my business laptops over the last years with great success.
Many laptop mobos of 2020 have two m.2 slots so cloning the drive should be easy, then change boot drive order or swap positions.
It's linked to the motherboard.
