This is the second book in the Halo series. This one is essentially a novelization of the first Halo video game, whereas the first book tells the story of Master Chief's past and the third book tells some of the events between halo 1 and 2 I believe.

I recall enjoying it, but I am a fan of the Halo expanded universe and game series.
I second this. These are really well made books.
As someone that's read most of these books, I really enjoyed this video from Polygon's Brian Gilbert:

"I read every Halo novel and became the Master Chief of loneliness | Unraveled"

I'll also say this was a great novelization of the first Halo game. I'll add that the author has also written a lot of other military sci-fi novels that are worth checking out if you're a fan of that genre. I remember really enjoying the Legion of the Damned, Sam McCade, and Drifter series from him as well.

If this is the second book, what is the name of the first and third?

First one is about The Fall of Reach and the third is First Strike. Last one is the only one of these I read and it was very good, taking place between Halo 1 and 2.

As others have mentioned this is part of the original Halo books trilogy, which is overall really good. However, this book is generally considered the worst one of the trilogy - just go check goodreads. I still found it quite an enjoyable read, if not as good as the other two of the trilogy.

Important to note, the "good books" you remember were all written by Eric Nylund. These books were excellent, and held their own against top-tier sci-fi. The books by other authors were...variable in quality at best.

Agree, Nylund was a masterful writer. This book "The Flood" was decent but definitely a dip in quality from the first and third book

Again, going off 15+ year memory here, but all the comments in this thread are accurate. I was astonished by the quality of Nylund's novels, but this book was... a little like an overenthusiastic spectator took notes while a friend played the game. Not nearly as compelling as the others, but fun if you're a fan.
