Last month I couldn't understand why Synology had a new model with quad-core CPU, 6 bays, 8GB, 2x m.2 slots.... sipping through a gigabit Ethernet straw.

This one's sort of the opposite - fat 10GbE pipe, but just 3 bays?

Still, with m.2 caching, it could be quite responsive. Pick up 3 8TB Easystore externals, shuck and RAID5 them, add in a 1TB m.2, and you have 16TB of fast online storage for less than $1000. Not bad.

The reason I'm looking for a new QNAP NAS is because the old one wasn't expandible (cpu/ram, etc, it has 6 bays). Everything I'm seeing released is seriously lacking in some element. Just trying not to go freenas, but maybe its time.

This is another example of products that should not be made in the first place. By putting 10GbE and M.2 together but tied a fixed 2GB RAM is deplorable marketing trickery.
