I was in Home Depot picking up some Phillips Hue lights and on the smart home section where all the NEST and RING products are displayed they had the Leak Prevention System with 1 Leak Detector on Clearance for $50

Reviews are mixed, but for $50 maybe worth a go. My store had 3, i picked up 2.

No plumber required

Features:

Includes Valve Shutoff Controller with Battery Backup, 1 Leak Detector, 1 Sensor Probes

Closes Off Main Water Supply When Leaks, Freezing Temps or Earthquakes are Detected

Use iOS or Android App to Control System from Anywhere

Welcome 👍

Hopefully that's accurate .... some Tallies can be off, especially @ Wally World.

If you don't see it on the shelves/racks, look overhead at the "overstock racking".

If still not found, THEN find an associate.

And learn the Golden Rule of BS: DON'T call asking for it.

If you do call ahead to ask, you probably will hear, "Oh, that 200$ thing? Oh, it's 50$ now? Gee, no, sorry .... it's, um, sold out, that inventory is, um, wrong (with a chuckle)"

Make sure your pipe has enough room to attach this. I ordered a different solution an while back and there was a corner joint not far from my valve which kept me from being able to attach it.

Also make sure your water shutoff valve turns easily. I have this (RCA branded) and while the shutoff motor has some torque, the water shutoff valve has to turn with little effort for the motor to be able to move the handle.

I bought this after the pressure relief valve on my water heater blew out and for about half an hour it was dumping water on my floor as fast as the pipe could deliver it. It took a week of noisy fans/dehumidifiers and an insurance claim to get things back in order. This would have prevented all that hassle.

It's great insurance - buy this now and hope you never need it. Totally worth it for $50!

About the above ..... another wifi valve motor system thread, another SDer had a good Tip:

Once a month you should tell the motor to close and open the valve.

That'll keep the valve loosey goosey .... it would be a shame if the motor couldn't cut the water off because the valve is frozen from corrosion.

Definitely a useful product, but if you do home automation better to get a Z-wave/Zigbee one and tie it all into your eco system.

I worry about these they need WiFi or the server to be active. In a quake the WiFi might die. If this company goes bust (and they frequently do) and the server goes down, then you have a brick. Get one that is Zigbee or zwave.

1 other drawback: Android/iOS App

As the operating system ages, support for app security gets canceled, as the engineers move-on to work on the newest operating systems.

That means: Who will support the app to talk with this device for the long haul?

I was at a local store that BS said has 4 in stock ..... I couldn't find a single one.

The plumbing guy, who says he's been there for years, says he doesn't remember having them.

He got a ladder, moved it around to look in a few places, took about a half hour, ultimately offering to keep looking and to call me.

I had this last year (bought from Costco) and I cannot recommend the device. Returned to Costco about 1 year later. Lots of false promises from the company to fix problems. It is completely unreliable. For example, randomly every few days to a week, the valve controller would crash (not responsive and would not close valve with leaks) and the only way to reset it is to unplug it (and remove battery) - basically like restarting a computer. Worst part is the app would not notify you when the controller crashed or is offline. So you would falsely believe you are being protected but in reality the controller is crashed (aka BSOD).
Second is many sensors failed within the year. Tested by replacing the battery and no dice.

Now this does not even consider the issues with a cloud based controller. If the company shuts down this project (which I think is more likely than not), then your purchase is useless. This company specializes in hardware and clearly does not know how to design software.

So I went to a Dome z-wave controller (actually made by the same company but I do not use their software) and Fibaro water leak sensors. This works perfectly and does not rely on the cloud. Even if both companies go out of business, my system will work.
