Distilling alcohol, even for personal use, without a Federal permit is illegal in the USA. Also, just owning a still is illegal some states, even if you don't use it for moonshining and only have it as a decoration. Here in Florida, it's a third degree felon to possess even the core parts of a distilling rig.
