That's pretty cool, nice intro books to get people interested enough to lose all their money. Play on a demo account for a year or two first, thank me later. Good way to get retailers in the market so they can proceed to be dumped on by institutional traders lol. Classic.

A bit cynical, aren't you? You're right that you can lose your shirt by making stupid trades or even by trying to time the market. I've certainly lost money on some stocks, over the years. Still, if you stick to really good companies, like Apple and Amazon and buy on a dip, you're likely to come out ahead, if investing for the long haul.

The average person will not be able to beat the market. [reddit.com] Most I've ever made is like $25/hr and I have 150iksh in roth IRA starting 5yrs ago. Here's the prime directive from personal finance, also check out /r/fire if you want to retire <10yrs assuming you are making at least minimum wage [USA].

Maybe if you hold AAPL it will win. However look at XOM Wink. VTSAX and a diversified non-stock profile ftw IMO.
