Cancelled my order from the other deal and got this one... before i found out about the $6/mo fee for basic $12/mo for GPS (i'm new to this, i should have known using your phone wouldn't be free.) Would be worth noting. Still excited to have a "more expensive" unit for only $20 more. Thanks!!
So here's the deal - a lot of cars require special harnesses and workarounds to either defeat or work alongside factory security features. This is especially true of luxury cars that have many more computer and security subsystems.

In some cases the "Geek Squad Auto" technician at your local Best Buy may have the know how, training, and access to parts to complete the install anyway but Best Buy doesn't have this information stored in its system - it's far easier for them to just say "sorry we can't do it" than to deal with the headache of a bunch of people complaining that the Geek Squad bricked their car or taking Best Buy to small claims court over a $10,000 bill from their local Porsche dealer for fixing a botched remote start job.

If you want to know for sure, call up the Geek Squad Auto tech at whichever Best Buy and speak to them. If you think they sound trustworthy and knowledgeable enough to work on your car and cut into your electrical system then sure do it.

I will say that I have been having issues with my Compustar remote start system with Drone Mobile that was installed into my 2017 WRX about 2-3 years ago by which I mean it no longer works period. The guy who did the work was experienced and knew his stuff, but there may have been some other factor that caused issues - i.e. my car had battery issues where the dealer had to replace the battery, don't know if that perhaps shorted something. Someone also busted up my front end and so the car had to go to a body shop - they were also reputable and did an excellent job, but who knows if they missed something that would've eventually caused problems with my drone mobile system? The caveat is that the remote start still works, I just can't it through the app - so is it a bug on Drone Mobile's side??

Any time there's aftermarket work done on the electrical system I'd say you have to be prepared for potential gremlins that can cause problems later on.
I would say no, it's not better to wait. With this deal, you get all the functionality of the other unit PLUS the LTE Drone service (if you want to use it).

It will work just like the other unit with the added benefit that, if you change your mind in the future about using the Drone service, you can simply start a subscription.

I will say that there have been times when I'm in a building and don't get anywhere close to the 3000ft range this is advertised as. Having the Drone app makes it easy to ensure that I can start my car in those types of situations.

So does this require me to sign up for a paid service for any meaningful use?
The LTE addons do have monthly fees. Remote start itself has no fee and a pretty good range, easily 1000m for my locations, I never have to try further. If I parked across downtown from my parking space or something I might maybe use the LTE. Or, I took train from Minneapolis to Mall of America parking and could not start until I was in the lot - if I did that daily would pay in the winter.

Thx, so I have to carry a separate fob for this remote start (assuming I don't want to pay for LTE) or it can work with my existing car fob key?

They can program it to work w/ existing fob but the Compustar one likely reaches much much further. My OEM one is 100ft on a good day vs. blocks w/ Compustar. I would have them set it to lock-unlock-lock so it is harder to hit by accident and will leave vehicle in a locked state.

Can you purchase LTE service separately with another company? As in, insert in a SIM card and have it work?
Good question. But you will still need another stand alone (free/open source) app to get this to work.

In my case: After clicking "Add to cart", a message appeared with "Select an installation option"
and there was a checkbox for "Remote Start Installation with T-Harness"

Awesome. Do you know if you have the Total Teck Support subscription before?

My apologies, I should have been more specific. The the website wants to charge me $149.99 for installation and t-harness on top of the remote starter. So the total for checkout shows up as $489.
