If you plan on installing to toolbox to make it like a stock Android tablet, don't expect it is a true stock Android tablet.
There are still small or big limitations to that depends on your purpose.

I have that on Fire HD 8 from the recent QVC deal and have the toolbox installed. It becomes more like stock Android but not everything works. I found at least.

1. App notification from Google App Store might not work. Facebook messaging works, Skype and Hubitat not. So, you will not receive message or call notifications. It seems to be known issue after posting at xda. If there is an Amazon Store version of the same app, you'd better go with that. So, don't uninstall Amazon Store.

2. Google account setting will not bring up. You can add google account from toolbox but you can't change any setting like what to sync to the tablet like email and contact, they will be always synced.

3. Wechat will not run and it will suspend your account when you go back to other devices saying you used a hacked device. Beware of that if you have people need to communicate using wechat.
Seems like a great deal when combined with HSN2020 code to get $20 off first order.
Good deal that comes around every couple months.

If you do purchase one, which I highly recommend, sideload google play (5 min - can be found on youtube) or use amazon fire toolbox (15 min - can be found on xda) to turn it into essentially a stock android tablet.

My family has owned nearly every type of Fire tablet the past five years and the current gen 10 is a good one. Keep in mind its a budget tablet, so don't expect ipad pro specs/performance; although for $100, these are a steal especially when compared to the other ridiculously bad budget android tablets floating out there.

What is the newest version? I downloaded a week ago and was no go. The write up may show it works, but I am not sure. I tried to personally, unless it is user error.

You are confusing Rooting and third party OS to Amazon Tool Box which allows you to disable ALL amazon apps including the launcher.

GOOGLE "XDA Amazon Tool Box", YOU DO NEED A PC to use XDA Amazon Tool Box.

Try it again.

There are TWO guides.... make sure you follow the correct one.

Good point. I don't find the parental controls very great, and trying to make them more like a stock tablet has been a bit of a headache. I wanted to just put google family link on it so I could control content for my kids that way, but I was unsuccessful in getting that to work right. They just feel like cheap tablets, and I find Amazon's OS version to not be that great. Plus they've all cracked. I have a google nexus 7 tablet from 6 or so years ago that still works fine; on the other hand, I have had about 6 fire7 or fire hd tablets in that time period, and most are cracked or not really working.
So you can't compare older models to this tablet regarding usability.

I now buy a foam case with a handle... FUNNY cause my old FireHD8 never cracked by my Samsung Tab S2, Nvidea Shield K1, and my Lenovo Tab4 have all cracked. I have also cracked my Axon 7, LG G3 and Samsung Galaxy 2 smart phones... now I buy a drop proof case.

And yes, this is a CHEAP tablet (and FEELS Cheap) that works pretty damn good. But when it is in my case... it just looks like a tablet in a case.

And with XDA Amazon Tool Box (and you need a PC) it has never been easier to convert a Fire tablet into a stock looking tablet.

About family controls... don't know if I can help you.

I couldn't get the $20 off code to work. I tried different email addresses, but it keeps telling me the code is invalid. Without it, they won't get the sale.
Same - I'm not sure what's up, maybe it knows it's a new account because of the CC or shipping address?

No more HSN... close the account. Their security check raise too many concerns for me.

Yep it just says it does not recognize and cannot work with maverick outright once I plugged it in. Did you have success with 8.2 on HD10/2019 version amazon fire (Maverick)?

Just make sure you do three things
1. Xda Amazon Tool Box
2. try to run one app at a time
3. use Killapps (download from play store) every time you turn it on and use Bluetooth.

You do these three things you will have a smile for years... IMHO.
I used the toolbox on my Fire 10" tablet but I'm not getting notifications like I used to with my old Sony tablet.
I used to get push notifications for all my Slickdeals Deal Alerts. And also notifications for every new email.
It's weird, notifications for Yahoo mail was working at first but I was poking around the settings and it stopped. I will occasionally get notices for a new Gmail, but that's pretty rare.
It's a real bummer because I relied on those notifications a lot. All of these apps have notifications turned on.
So now I have to go to each app and refresh and wait for them to load before I can see what's new.

Do you know if there's any solution to this? Even if I download the apps using Amazon's store it still won't give me any notifications.

bought one. $85.xx total.
- will install that XDA thing or maybe just install Google Play services
- will probably use or play around for 3 days
- after that, this will probably end up in a drawer never to be seen again.

STILL using a 5 year old Mediatek economy processor. Im getting old waiting for a fire tablet with decent performance.

Edit: Since someone in particular called this into question
https://www.specsmedia.com/proces...ek-mt8173/
"Mediatek MT8173 is a SoC, announced in Q1 of 2015."
If this is the latest Fire 10, it uses the Mediatek MT8183 which was introduced in late 2019.

Best place to ask this question is XDA Amazon Tool Box thread. Good luck.

P.S.
Realize that if you get a notification, that means there is an app running in the background... this tablet is not that fast and I personally want no notifications.
