There are still small or big limitations to that depends on your purpose.
I have that on Fire HD 8 from the recent QVC deal and have the toolbox installed. It becomes more like stock Android but not everything works. I found at least.
1. App notification from Google App Store might not work. Facebook messaging works, Skype and Hubitat not. So, you will not receive message or call notifications. It seems to be known issue after posting at xda. If there is an Amazon Store version of the same app, you'd better go with that. So, don't uninstall Amazon Store.
2. Google account setting will not bring up. You can add google account from toolbox but you can't change any setting like what to sync to the tablet like email and contact, they will be always synced.
3. Wechat will not run and it will suspend your account when you go back to other devices saying you used a hacked device. Beware of that if you have people need to communicate using wechat.
If you do purchase one, which I highly recommend, sideload google play (5 min - can be found on youtube) or use amazon fire toolbox (15 min - can be found on xda) to turn it into essentially a stock android tablet.
My family has owned nearly every type of Fire tablet the past five years and the current gen 10 is a good one. Keep in mind its a budget tablet, so don't expect ipad pro specs/performance; although for $100, these are a steal especially when compared to the other ridiculously bad budget android tablets floating out there.

There are TWO guides.... make sure you follow the correct one.
FIRE HD 8 (2018)/FIRE HD 7, 10 (2019) Guide:
FIRE HD 8, 10 (2017-2014) Guide:
I now buy a foam case with a handle... FUNNY cause my old FireHD8 never cracked by my Samsung Tab S2, Nvidea Shield K1, and my Lenovo Tab4 have all cracked. I have also cracked my Axon 7, LG G3 and Samsung Galaxy 2 smart phones... now I buy a drop proof case.
And yes, this is a CHEAP tablet (and FEELS Cheap) that works pretty damn good. But when it is in my case... it just looks like a tablet in a case.
And with XDA Amazon Tool Box (and you need a PC) it has never been easier to convert a Fire tablet into a stock looking tablet.
About family controls... don't know if I can help you.

1. Xda Amazon Tool Box
2. try to run one app at a time
3. use Killapps (download from play store) every time you turn it on and use Bluetooth.
You do these three things you will have a smile for years... IMHO.
I used to get push notifications for all my Slickdeals Deal Alerts. And also notifications for every new email.
It's weird, notifications for Yahoo mail was working at first but I was poking around the settings and it stopped. I will occasionally get notices for a new Gmail, but that's pretty rare.
It's a real bummer because I relied on those notifications a lot. All of these apps have notifications turned on.
So now I have to go to each app and refresh and wait for them to load before I can see what's new.
Do you know if there's any solution to this? Even if I download the apps using Amazon's store it still won't give me any notifications.
- will install that XDA thing or maybe just install Google Play services
- will probably use or play around for 3 days
- after that, this will probably end up in a drawer never to be seen again.
Edit: Since someone in particular called this into question

P.S.
Realize that if you get a notification, that means there is an app running in the background... this tablet is not that fast and I personally want no notifications.
