TOM is not everybody's cup of tea. They're sorta the Hammacher-Schlemmer/ Sharper Image for whatever the current generation of impulse buyers is called. A lot of what they feature appear to be leftover stock or overproduction from items that debuted on Kickstarter, Indiegogo, etc., and as such, frankly some of their offerings are mildly bizarre. Bidets for the bathroom? Check. Unusual wines and liquours? Check. $15,000 fossils to display on your office wall? Check. Lingerie for the missus? They've got her covered. Well, so to speak.

Slickdealers will also discover that the some prices at TOM are just barely discounted once you add on their somewhat confiscatory shipping charges. And the shipping on some items is S...L....O......W. ---sometimes weeks or even months. Not a place to buy from if you need something for an imminent birthday.

Having said all of that, I still find myself buying from them 4 or 5 times a year because they have such an eclectic inventory, and many of the things that caught my eye could not be found elsewhere online. The trick is to watch for when their gift cards go on sale (that would be today). Stock up on those for 20% off. Free shipping on gift cards, BTW. And you can also reap an additional 6% cashback on those giftcard purchases if you go through the proper cashback shopping portal, for a net discount on the giftcards of 26%. Yes please!

FInal note--- when you finally redeem a gift card at TOM, the full amount gets stored in your account, and they won't let you use the gift card balance to cover shipping or tax charges.
