I believe you can pay off early and unlock, I did it several times.
Yeah but how does the cost get spread out over the 30 months? For example, if you want to get out at 10 months, do you just pay for 2/3 of the total cost? (10 months / 30 months = 1/3 of the time has gone by, and 2/3 remaining)?

If I want to upgrade again next October, will this screw me over? None of this is covered in the terms currently posted. Will likely just have to wait for deal to show up on AT&T website.

Not sure I understand all the negative comments towards this deal. It's not a BOGO, people! What difference does the contract being 30 months mean, if they are all paid for?(in the iPhone 12's case)...if that's too long, then pay off early! Not sure I understand the hate here.

ATT will gladly take your money whenever you want to pay! But seriously as long as it's paid for you are good.

The 30 months of promotional credit is tied to the line (on an Unlimited plan), not the device.
If you pay off the phone, you will stop seeing a charge of $26.67 on your bill, but you'll still get the $26.67/month credits for 30 months.

If you port out the line, the $26.67/month credits will stop.

The line won't be eligible for an upgrade promotion via Apple/AT&T for 30 months, if you're still receiving credits.

If you want to upgrade next year, you'll want to check out the AT&T Installment Plan with Next Up, which is an extra $5/month.

We currently have AT&T but were thinking about switching to T-Mobile if they have a better deal. We need to add a line and currently have 3 with an iPhone 8 Plus, 8 and 7 available for trade-in. Probably looking at getting 12 minis for the kids and then a 12 and 12 Pro. Is it better to stick with AT&T or jump?
Dont forget there might be a Att Loyalty deal with better discount and no tradins coming up that you can pay off to unlock.

Does it have to be for a new line of service?

I'd wait for Costco deal,we get cash card instead of billing credits
When does Costco normally come out and is it normally a competitive trade-in value, just discount on the phone, or both?

No, upgrades are also eligible. That is relatively uncommon.

Yah, it's either the 30 months installment OR the 2 year contract. The 2 year contract is something you have to call retention/loyalty to get.

And to further clarify, you did not buy your phone outright. Buying a phone "outright" means you bought it at full price (minus manufacturer/retailer discounts like BestBuy, Walmart, etc) and phone is unlocked and can be used on any carrier that the phone is compatible with.

What you did with AT&T is just taking a $450 discount upfront from AT&T and in exchange, you agree to being locked to their network for two years. Your phone is not unlocked and you won't be able to request unlock until your contract ends, if you leave and pay the ETF, or got lucky and they unlock your phone before your contract ends for whatever reason.

The 30 months installment on the other hand is a way to finance your phone with AT&T where you pay back total cost of the phone over 30 months at 0% interest - this is basically an interest free loan. After you pay off the total amount to AT&T for your phone, you can then request for your phone to be network unlocked to use on other carriers.
I agree with the two yr contracy from Att Loyalty.

The 30 month installment has bill credits so if you payoff the phone and leave you WILL NOT GET THE CREDITS I believe but you can unlock.
But
If you payoff the phone and stay with AT&T then you WILL get the bill credits and unlock.

Am I right?

So technically, I could pay this off for $199 after a month and have an unlocked phone and not be tied to ATT?
If you pay it off after a month, you only get the bill credit for 1 month as opposed to 30 months. Basically, you saved nada on the phone but presumably the bill credit would continue towards your overpriced ATT plan which you had to get as a condition of the bill credit. Basically, as an analogy it is like Louis Vitton saying it will give you 25% off an overpriced item to begin with.

This.

With eligible trade in, you're gonna see a charge on your line/account of $26.67 per month, every month for 30 months. And an offsetting credit of $26.67 for 30 months on that same line/account as part of this promotion.

You take the line elsewhere, and the credits stop.

This is essentially the same offer seen every fall. But now it applies to upgraders as well Big Grin

Is this true, or only if you switch after 1 month.

You only get the full $800 in credits if you keep the line active for 30 months.

30 x $26.67 = $800 aka free iPhone.

What if you buy phone and then trade it in after 12 months for another phone?
