Who the heck cares if you want a new phone in two years instead of 30 months? Just pay off your phone, then sell it trade it do whatever you want with it. You would miss out on like $150 worth of credits. Which means you still got $650 worth of credits for a phone that was not worth that, most likely. Unless you have a brand new phone from last year or something this is an incredible deal and even if you don't keep the phone the full 30 months you're still coming out ahead.
I am currently on 9gb mobile share plan (2 lines) for $60 (with 30% employer discount) = $42.
+$20 for each line access
$82 Total before taxes and fees (~$93 after).
The only plans I see online now are (for 2 lines):
Shared 4GB: $90 (doesn't qualify for these deals)
Starter Unlimited w/o hotspot: $120
Extra Unlimited w/ hotspot 15gb: $130
Elite Unlimited w/ hotspot 30gb and HBO: $150
* Just called and found out these prices INCLUDE the access fees
* Employer discounts only work on Elite!!
So to get any of these iPhone deals, you instantly have to upgrade to a plan that is a minimum of $20 INCREASE.
+$20*30mo = $600!!!
Just be careful. AT&T has done this to me in the past. Here is a deal, but we have to change your grandfathered plan and BAM, big increase.

Would it be wise to pay that $199 off now or just go do this deal at the AT&T store so there's less hassle?

That said, I got me and my wife an iPhone X and iPhone 8+ on a BOGO deal 3 years ago.
So three years ago we only paid for one phone, and now three years later AT&T is going to give us $1600 towards two new phones. This is a good deal. This is slickdeals.com. If you are trying to be frugal or stretch your dollar then you're going to be the kind of person that keeps a phone longer anyways.
My gripe is that so many people in this thread of many many pages talks about what a "trash" deal this is. If you were the type of person that is getting yearly phone upgrades you are not going to get handed a free phone each time. Basically your best option is to just trade in your phone or sell it out right and then buy the new one. I have done that before as well. Usually you can get a brand new phone for about 50% of the price if your last phone is only a year old.

It's not a horrible deal just pointing out how this deal really preys on a consumers blind optimism that in 30 months they won't feel the upgrade itch. In reality they will definitely say "I don't care about the $27 bill credit for last 8 months of this 30 months I WANT NEW PHONE"
Or does it have to be a phone that is unlocked or locked to AT&T?
For instance if I have an iPhone 8 that is locked to Verizon or T-Mobile will AT&T accept it for trade-in?

I placed an order for 12 pro with trade in and it showed me 6.67 per month in cart.
But confirmation email says total 999.99 so just making sure what others are getting in confirmation email.
