I just said screw it and ordered an unlocked 12pro max from apple this morning instead, used a card to get 5.25% cash back and will keep my cheap plan with no carrier lock or credits to keep track of.
I'm not losing my employer discount or 9gb shared plan.
For those with older shared plans with discounts, the only upgrade options are:
1. Loyalty 2 year plan on low cost XR/XS/11, etc. - adds $20/mo to your access fee per line. That is basically $20*24=$480 which is the same cost as the discount they give you on the phone... so it's not even much of a deal.
2. Upgrade to Unlimited plans for $40-50 more per month. Can get $850 trade in value, but the +$40/mo increase over 30 mo = $1200... which is also the same price as a phone outright. You do get unlimited data, but if you don't need that, it's definitely not worth the $40-50/mo.
3. Buy the phone outright and keep your old low cost plan. - This is the cheapest route. Just have to wait for deals on phones or buy used.
4. Buy phone outright and Switch to pre-paid
