Just a word of warning: I cancelled my order after reading about what happened to this poor guy:

https://advrider.com/f/threads/li...l.1355854/

The electric only front brake failed while he was going downhill at 25mph and he had to bail into a ditch. I cancelled my order after reading about it.

Going to stick with my weaker Xiaomi m365 that at least has a mechanical rear disc brake.

Thanks for pointing this out.

My family bought an es4 in late 2018 ND experienced this while riding a few times. We've been VERY tentative to ride it ever since, but about a year ago we noticed a firmware update and haven't noticed the problem again in the few times we've ridden.

Does anyone have any more history on this from segway? Any formal acknowledgement and/or fix that's been implemented?

Also, please know that these Bird versions do not fold down. That said, it's super fun and, at $300, would be a steal if the issues above are resolved.

Yikes. So a problem that isn't a one-off.

Good point on the non-folding thing, forgot to mention that. Will edit into my post.

can't you just use the rear brake?

Sure. Just that it's not a normal reaction when you're out of control to put your rear foot on the friction brake. Most likely, you're getting your feet ready to bail and jump off.

Also, a front brake sounds actually scary with a high center of gravity vehicle like this. Feels like it might topple over - just assuming, no real experience of it. A mechanical rear disc brake like on my m365 is the way to go.

I know I'm hurting the Thumbs Ups by pointing all this out but I'd rather no one get hurt than that they get a good deal.

I feel like these things end up wearing and tearing and if you don't know physical or electrical engineering to some degree it becomes garage space, unless someone has a scooter going 3+ years stronf

I use my Xiaomi almost every day in NYC to get food and run errands. They're fantastic even with all the potholes. Just ride carefully and wear a helmet.

Might be a different story in the suburbs where you don't need to get around short distances. It is still great for last mile commuting.

I have the ES3, when doing down hill, you have to use the brake at the very beginning TO CONTROL the speed....I tried the speed up to 28 or 25 I forgot. It is fast but it is also manageable when you use brake the while down time.

I own two of these. AMA. Purchased in August for $450ish each. Wish my card still had price protection!

A few things: these use a different control board from the normal Ninebot ES4, so many of the features that the Ninebot version has are limited. The Ninebot app won't work with them so no cruise control/light control/etc. No security features. Basically, you can just turn them on and they'll go.

The battery level doesn't update on the dashboard unless you power cycle the unit. It just takes a second, but this is kind of annoying. Do it at a stop, because while the scooter is off the electric brake doesn't work. The rear manual brake works, but it's not great. I live in a very flat place, so not too worried about hills here.

Also, they don't do 15.5, but 14-14.5.

With all of that being said, you aren't going to find a better bang for the buck imho. Plenty of range and acceleration/speed for most users.

I've got maybe 100-150 miles on mine, and have had zero issues. I did buy the extended warranty.

Edit: just realized I'm still within the 90 day return period on my original purchase!
