Solid lights are good. Don't be one of those a-holes who rides around with it on flashing mode.
Flashing lights are more visible to distracted drivers (which is....most of them). After being almost killed several times by a-holes in cars, I use all three of my lights ONLY in flashing mode. Bonus: the battery lasts longer too.

Illegal? Do you ride a bike? Safety first. Lots of things can potentially cause crashes. There's some super bright flashers that might be candidates for control, but most keep the cyclist safer and give the driver awareness and time to deal with it.

Yes, I do. And there's no evidence that flashing lights are safer for cyclists. In fact, in at least one study, while they were shown to make cyclists more visible generally, they were also shown to be more dangerous because it makes it more difficult for drivers to judge their distance away from them. Like I said before, flashing lights are incredibly distracting and can cause crashes. After doing some quick research, it looks like they are already illegal here in Michigan as far as I can tell, unless there's a statute that explicitly allows them.
Not sure about the legality but anyone who rides a bike at night(or drives) knows they are more visible from farther away with flashing lights than with non flashing lights. Here's a study that helps confirm this:

Evidently, you didn't even read the study you referenced, because there is nothing in it that confirms that. Cyclists in that study made almost no distinction in the relative effectiveness of flashing vs non-flashing lights.

They are not illegal in Michigan (thankfully) because apparently Michigan lawmakers have put more rational thought into this than you have. Michigan just requires lights, no mention of flashing or not: https://www.michigan.gov/document...5969_7.pdf

I don't give a crap if a driver is confused about my exact distance from them, I am more concerned with whether or not they notice me AT ALL, which a flashing light is obviously better at accomplishing.

More rational thought, eh? Nice try, but that document doesn't reference any law that explicitly allows flashing lights, which is necessary because it would need to amend MCL 257.698 [mi.gov], which prohibits flashing lights with limited exceptions, of which bicycles are not one. Show me a law that does that (e.g. where that statute has been amended) rather than making yourself look like an idiot.

Here's the statute [mi.gov] requiring lights on bicycles. As you said, it does not specify solid or flashing, which means that it is consistent with the previously mentioned statute. That also means that it must be solid because bicycles are not an exception to the prohibition on flashing lights.

You would probably be pretty surprised by how often emergency vehicles with flashing lights (police, fire, tow trucks, etc.) get rear-ended by drivers blinded intermittently by the flashing lights, something that can be exacerbated by poor vision or even a dirty windshield. In fact, emergency personnel are trained to routinely surveil approaching traffic after dark and react accordingly for this very reason.

If you have modern, high-powered bike LED lights, it's best to use the flash function during the day, and then switch to solid at night. Your views about flashing lights being a better solution to night riding used to be shared by those in the American bike industry. That changed a number of years ago. I know that it's been at least 5 years since I last used bike flasher mode at night after learning about the negatives.

The safest thing to do is run both a flashing light and a solid light. For example, a good set of Front and Rear lights (solid) with this helmet light in flashing mode.

A flashing light is much more visible among other lights, and solid lights generally give better depth (distance) perception. Flashing lights are also much more visible during the day or dawn/dusk.
