I don't give a crap if a driver is confused about my exact distance from them, I am more concerned with whether or not they notice me AT ALL, which a flashing light is obviously better at accomplishing.

If you have modern, high-powered bike LED lights, it's best to use the flash function during the day, and then switch to solid at night. Your views about flashing lights being a better solution to night riding used to be shared by those in the American bike industry. That changed a number of years ago. I know that it's been at least 5 years since I last used bike flasher mode at night after learning about the negatives.
A flashing light is much more visible among other lights, and solid lights generally give better depth (distance) perception. Flashing lights are also much more visible during the day or dawn/dusk.
