Spoke with Sam's Club customer service about 2 weeks ago. Told your membership must be expired for 6 months before considered a "new" member sign up.

However, if someone else signs up as a new member then you can be their complimentary member no matter how long ago your membership expired.

I have both Costco and Sam's. I always get this Sam's deal. It always comes out free with deals like these. After going to Sam's and Costco's for 10+ years I have found some items at Sam's that I can't find at Costco. If I could only choose 1 membership it would probably be Costco but I really like Sam's too. I love the scan and go at Sam's. It really beats out having to wait in checkout to pay. Also the hotdogs are way better at Sam's lol.

Do you need a more compelling reason than free?

Use a different email address -- if you have gmail, you can insert a "." in your email address and it will still go to your main mailbox, but it will count as a new email for sam's.

I'm a Costco shopper. Does anyone have some compelling reasons as to why trying Sam's Club might be worthwhile?
I do both. I find myself buying more grocery stuff from Sams. Costco has kind of gotten full of themselves lately and their pricing isn't really that great on day to day stuff. I will still buy electronics from them for obvious reasons. Also Costco has good pricing on the occasional seasonal items (coats, gloves, blankets) that are generally higher quality of Sams. Costco's return policy can't be beat though. I can justify the Costco membership just for the gas savings. As for Sams, they carry a few products I can't get anywhere else so I keep the membership.

Everything you want to buy at Sam's club is available at Wal-Mart (at least online) for same price with free 2-day shipping in most cases. I saw no point in renewing the membership as I have Costco membership.

Another option for cheap gas on road trips.

And the occasional incredible slickdeal. I did the free membership just to score a $150 pellet smoker.

Can anyone comment on the frozen fruit variety @ Sams vs Costco?

I'm saying that as a non-business customer, I can find everything at Walmart for pretty much same price but a small business owners like restaurant owners will definitely find Sam's more useful than any other store because of their cheap steel spoons, forks, butcher paper, 25 liter frying oil, etc.

Costco always slightly better. But Sam's is pretty good too, if Costco has pretty much same item as Sam's it's almost always organic at Costco.

Weird Denial Code error. My Amex service texted me asking about potential fraud.

Sam's Scan and Go is a big plus, no need to stand in a queue; scan and do the checkout from the mobile app.
Both Sam's and Costco carry the same brand items but the price is slightly low in Sam's.

By accepting this offer, you authorize annual recurring charges to any card on file for your Sam's Club membership fee(s) plus any applicable taxes at then-current rate every year until you cancel.
It gets better. 2nd page:

"Any card on file" means any card I've used at Sam's Club, via my online wallet, or by using to pay online or in club.

I wonder how this is legal.

I shop both, costco wins overall. Toilet paper is definitely better at Sam's, if you're buying house brand. Members mark is better, we've returned kirkland TP to get members mark. Here in Vegas, sam's club has a slight edge in the meat department. Some clubs have a display for the meat. Don't get me wrong, I buy nearly 95% of my beef from Costco, but to see the cuts of meat in the display fridge gives you more of that impulse to buy a monster cowboy/tomahawk steak. My costco only recently carried them, or atleast stocked more to be available.

To make memberships "free" every year, alternate email addresses or swap between yourself and wife or family member. Email has to be expired 180 days I believe to be considered a new member. There are always deals here w valued rewards over the cost of the membership. When we travel, we can get gas at both clubs along the route. We rarely fail to find either club, another little perk if you don't want to pay 15ยข+ /gal.

I have both and I just let my Costco expire. Sam's has a lot more locations East Coast and I've done many cross country trips using Sam's as my fuel up/rest stop. Gas is usually a few cents cheaper than Costco, and it's 15 cents cheaper in my city for premium vs Costco. Sam's online shopping lets me can look at the price online and even order for pickup. Costco's website is terrible but overall quality of store branded products is substantially better. Overall, if both had no signup deals, I'd probably alternate year by year depending on how much I travel but since Sam's is free, I have a very very hard time justifying paying $60/year for Costco.
