You don't actually have to, to be able to skip setting up a MS account don't configure the network until AFTER you have created the local account. If it has a network connection it is stubborn until there is no network.
This is an excellent non-subscription deal for Office, so I'm not thread crapping. I have been a user of Office since I bought the 30lb box with nearly huge manuals and ~40 floppies in the mid-90s (though, definitely upgraded since) But if you are not using some of the really in-depth editing tools, and are just *Used* to Word and Excell, I have found the free Open Office has totally worked for me. (Libre Office, the newer version, is apparently better yet, though I can't vouch for it personally)

Word is definitely the gold standard, and integrated with most schools/workplaces. But if that's not your situation, you should definitely take a look at the open source suites.
No you can't. You CAN rent someone else's stolen username/password for a little while, till the actual owner figures it out and removes your access...

Like one of the users mentioned earlier, do we need a Microsoft account to download this?

That user was just paranoid. You need an account, but there is no thing wrong with that.

Yes. Newegg just gives you a link. Once you go to microsoft website it does ask you to have a MS account because the CD key is linked to that ONE account. Meaning if you want to install on someone else's laptop you cannot unless you login in with your MS account. Yes you can uninstall/reinstall on your own computer multiple times or even different computers but it is linked to a MS account.

I've owned the stand alone MS office 2010, 2016, and 2019. 2010 was the only edition that allowed you to use the install files without having to deal with a login, but that might have changed. You can't even download the office 2010 from their website no more (broken link), and i've lost the install files.

Any idea if just the MS office home & student edition may be available for even lower price than this in the next few weeks?

There's got to be a reason they ae so desperate to try to force people to use MS accounts. Now Windows 10 has gone from me being able to ignore the create an account message when signing into windows to saying I have to let it remind me 3 days later. So they must be mighty desperate to have everyone tie their pcs to accounts.

When setting up fresh PC you now have to link to MS account/email.
You can remove later and go to local account...but I'm sure they've tied the hardware signature to a name/email :/

I should have already downloaded an older version of win 10 or built the pc before now then. That is ridiculous.
