Why are they so absurdly expensive? Crock Pot has 7 quart cast iron enamel dishes for $60. Is there something I'm missing?
They're effectively heirloom items. They perform well and last forever. Can you get the same thing for a quarter of the price from another brand? Yes, but it would be like getting a Timex instead of Omega.

This is helpful. Maybe the better comparison is a Tissot to Omega? In that a Tissot (Swatch group movement) is just as good in quality as an Omega but simply lacks brand cache?

Probably Tissot vs Omega is more fitting. I would say in terms of resale value, Le Creuset would actually have some.

Thanks! There is actually some good pricing on the Crock Pot brand equivalents at Amazon right now. The 7-Quart Round Slate Gray (only this color for some reason) keeps bouncing between $62.99 and $52.99. That's a helluva deal for a 7 Quart.

Because crock pot is made in China and Le Creuset is made in France. Also things like better warranty and stricter quality control for Le Creuset. Same goes for Staub. Higher quality costs more. If you use these often, buy the better brand. If you use it twice per year, get Tramontina or some other cheaper one.
