for some it won't matter but note these are end of the line for software updates from Garmin, much older models, it's a pre-BF clearance
I feel like most garmin smartwatches are baked with 95% of functionality when shipped and the updates they put out after release are generally for bug fixes or minor enhancements. Most garmin wearers I'd guess are wearing the watch for the activity tracking and there's not a big need for updates.

I will say that for me the feature which was a "game changer" for running was having music on-board, but those who run with a phone anyway may find it irrelevant whether music is onboard a watch. I don't think any of these have music on-board.

Which part? EOL software, or putting it on sale? These are at least 3 years old and it's Amazon clearing them out not Garmin. Besides I'm not sure that garmin ever really declares something officially EOL, they just stop providing updates as they move to new products.

Can you provide any verifiable links for that? The latest series is the 6, which seems to be only one generation newer.

Great deal on the 5X Sapphire, even if it is getting a bit older. I just had a software update on mine last night. As stated before, it's not like Garmin is going to push awesome new features to it, but rather bug fixes, etc.

There are sites out there that compare the different generations of Fenix watches. Personally the extras on the 6 weren't anything I wanted anyway, so I was (and still am) perfectly happy with the 5X.

Hmm these are great watches (the fenix series anyway) and it really depends on what you are wanting from a watch.
These are for active people. The 5X plus is sold out now which added the music but the 5X and 5 are still extremely good, tough, versatile watches.
If you hunt with dogs (or other long range activity) you can connect the watch and dog's gps collars. You can use it for tracking just about any activity and it has golf functionality.
It is not and never will be a 'smartwatch' like an Apple watch but if you are training, hiking, hunting, etc. at this price its a fantastic deal.
I also have not heard about EOL for the software, I'd like to see that link

EOL for software never really happens with the Garmin watches. I still have an old Forerunner 10 that I could still use (and have in a pinch). They just came out with Connect IQ 4, but no watches will ship with that until next year. Unfortunately, Garmin doesn't make their software backwards compatible. For example, an old apple watch can still get the new WatchOS, but an old Forerunner, Fenix, or even the the MARQ will never get the new connect 4 platform.

Not a bad deal. Software update is more, like some mentioned already, for bug fixes, sensor software related. My 6x pro solar got updated yesterday

Still rocking my Fenix 5 after years of wearing it every day. Battery life isn't as good as new but still fine for my purposes. I have no plans on upgrading anytime soon unless there is some major improvement, there aren't many features being added to newer units that interest me.

Garmin controls the sale prices, as most vendors do. Otherwise you would see them for much cheaper on Amazon than everywhere else.

I mean cannot really expect a 50% off on new models. Isnt that what sales are about, clearing out old stock to make way for "newer" stock.

Is this deep discount probably because of the new fenix 7 dropping soon?
