It Finally works! Costco Blueair 121 Air Purifier 199 Delivered (Members/Online only)

Live now. (product not found/ sold out currently?)
I figured this was worth calling out from the Costco flyer since the Blueair 121 has been a popular deal at 300 fairly recently. This is the bigger version (620 Sq ft) of the one that was 200 at Amazon during prime day - the 211+ (540 Sq ft.)

How would this compare to the Winix model they run on sale ($99) fairly regularly?

The square footage of effective filtering is the important separator on these. Based on Wirecutter reviews, the 121 would be great for a large family room with vaulted ceiling or other large open space. Likely overkill for a bedroom where your smaller Winix / Conway / Dyson models will work just as well. Between those smaller models you get more into the feature comparisons for finding the best fit for you.

I've really liked the 211+ in my living room and a Dyson in the bedroom setup with more scheduling options and a low light/night time mode.

It does not, and filters can be a bit pricier than smaller purifiers from other brands.

But just noting that it was getting some positive attention at 300 just 2 weeks ago

So if you buy a filter yourself, its the equivalent of that deal but with a "free filter included" Smilie

Have been very happy with my 121. It's basically just a taller 211+ which I also have. Same footprint. While the 121 is far more than enough for most bedrooms, its fan seems lower-pitched than my little 411. Probably better for sleeping.

I have both and it is like comparing an apple to a grape. The blueair is much bigger and nicer and works much better.

Beware this is not a true HEPA filter.

I don't own both, but based on specifications I don't agree with the person who claims to have both above (oldbean). While the cadr rating is high and this can cover double the room size, all that means is that there is a larger louder fan in the blueair unit. The blueair does not use a hepa filter, so odds are it doesn't actually filter very well even with the larger fan. And the combination of the carbon/fake hepa means it won't clean smells very well either or will need to have the filter replaced way too often. The blueair doesn't have the air quality sensor that winix has, and winix has an ioniozer to further clean the air of bacteria.

In reality the winix is a much better deal, you can buy 2 winix for the price of 1 blueair and they will cover the same room sizes. In addition you'll get an extra years worth of filters with those winix, plus all the other extras the winix provides over the blueair.

It *says* it matches HEPA performance:

"Our unique combination of electrostatic and mechanical filtration that we call HEPASilent™ filtration technology sets us apart. The combination allows us to use filters that are less dense and require less air pressure than traditional HEPA filters without a loss in performance— resulting in quieter and more energy efficient air purifiers."

They always say that. If they can really match the performance then they would just say HEPA instead of all that meaningless, non-quantifiable justifications. Read any independent advisory and you'll see only HEPA filters are recommended, because even then real-world performance will be much worse than those lab tests in controlled conditions.

Edit: HEPA opens up a huge chunk of the market. It's like a student claiming to have passed an SAT-equivalent test. Either take it or don't but don't try to claim something you didn't take.
