This will come with a very basic basemap, unlike some other Garmins that come preloaded with U.S & Canada TOPO Maps. Just something to think about, because Garmin's maps aren't exactly cheap.
You can probably get some 3rd party maps much cheaper or even free, but that takes a little work (Google it).
I always use my iPhone.... LOL
I think this is a good price for 'brand new'. I still use my old Garmin Oregon 650 for mountain biking. Compared to this newer model Garmin hasn't really added massive new features that I really need and justifies an upgrade. Though I could buy Garmin devices via their family and friends program for 50%. But if you are in for a real outdoor device this it is (or can be). Just don't expect the iPhone screen, CPU and experience. But this thing has flown from my handlebar a couple of times and landed off the trail, on rocks and still works. Wouldn't like to try that with my iPhone. Plus it works with 2 AA batteries. I always have two enerloops in my backpack as backup. If it dies on the trail I just swap batteries.
I wouldn't pay money for Garmin maps. Have been an https://openmtbmap.org/ user for years and they work very well for hiking and mountain biking. At least for me (and there are a ton of other open source maps out there). If I find a new trail that isn't on the map I add or correct it on open street map and then download and install the map update a week later.

Funny how they don't inundate every thread for mirrorless or DSLR cameras. It's an anti-GPS conspiracy!
You probably already know this because it is just common sense but in my experience not every phone or tablet is equal when it comes to GPS. Like my 2013 Nexus 7 WiFi will struggle with Google Maps and my Nexus 5 will outright forget it even has a GPS module at times while the Moto E4 seems to be pretty fast at picking up GPS satellite signals. I'd imagine a USD 20 locked Moto E6 would do equally well if not better.
I don't know enough about GPS things to say what this Garmin can do that google maps or open street maps cannot do.
But I doubt cell phones will reach parity with DSLR camera any time soon

It's in German but it seems there are open source alternatives out there. I'm not a user so can't say if they are good or not.

Yes, this is a GPS device for navigation and tracking. You cannot text or call with it.
So this would be a no-go for H.S. kids
