SHR always uses one drive with the largest capacity for parity, so putting one 14TB in won't get you anything more than what the Synology has now. You will want to buy at least two 14TB drives. Replace one drive, wait for SHR to rebuild, then repeat with the other new drive. You will end up with 2TB more than current. If you were to replace all four 12TB drives, you would end up with 6TB more than current.
The golden question, what's inside?

Extended returns in effect if you're on the fence.

Purchases made October 13, 2020 through January 2, 2021 have an extended return period through January 16, 2021
These won't get lower. BB does this every year, they offer the BF pricing a few weeks ahead of BF and then again at BF. I buy their BF special drives every year and upgrade both my servers and sell off the drives from the year before. It's the exact same scenario every time. This year it's the 14TB. Last year was the 12TB, 10 before that and 8 before that.

In for 2. Might be cheaper by the time I actually manage to fill the 8tb parity this will free up + the additional 14tb.

(**TL;DR Skip down to the asterisks)

Hoping someone in this thread might be able to help me out with a technical question:

I currently have four 8TB external drives (WD's) that are about 80% full (I run a plex server). Currently I've been sweating because I don't have any type of RAID backup going on (If a drive dies, it's 8TB of lost data).

I just purchased four of these bad boys (RIP my wallet). So, what I'd like to achieve is backing up all of my current drives, with the hopes of having some extra left over for future expansion. I'm currently running my Plex server off the externals plugged in through a USB hub. I looked into a NAS bay drive but most only fit 4 drives which would be two drives and 2 for backup... which is nowhere near the amount of bays I need for what will now be.... 8 hard drives I'll have. (8 Bay NAS's cost more than my computer).

****So, now that I've given you the setup, a few questions:

1) Will it be fine to just have 8 external drives plugged into my PC via a hub? Is there a better way to do this? Shuck them and put them all in some type of enclosure? Not going to lie that many drives in external enclosures is going to take up a lot of physical space, lol

2) Anyone know of the best way to back up my current data and cross transfer it? I'll have four 8TB drives and four 14TB drives. Is there some "smart" software that will evenly spread my data across the 8tb drives or something?

3) Really, any other tips or tricks for handling the type of setup I have would be awesome. Also I realize I should probably seek out some type of tech forum for this instead of SD, but I just bought these (damn you SD!) and was here so figured people in this thread may be knowledgeable.

I appreciate any and all responses. Thank you so much!

This is nothing new. I've been on the receiving end of this twice now. BB really needs to validate before accepting their returns.
That would mean that they either need to care or actually have a clue as to what they are doing in that store. Neither applies there

that has NOTHING to do with it! Stop posting crap if you don't know what you are talking about..
Why don't you follow your own advice? The SATA spec has been updated to have the drive turn off it if gets 3.3v to pin3. Before it was undefined what would happen so some power supplies put 3.3v on the pin, some didn't. New ones shouldn't as they would be violating the SATA power specs. The quickest google search would enlighten you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ser...vision_3.3

No. In the USA opening a device does not void the warranty due to the Magnum-Moss act. Only if you cause the damage that broke it would the warranty be void. This was reenforced a few years ago. Noice the game consoles no longer have the illegal stickers.
If you want to carry a lawsuit all the way to the Supreme Court, I un-sarcastically wish you good luck. But hundreds of thousands of people contest warranties every year, and the Magnum-Moss act comes up almost 0% of the time. I hope your post increases the likelihood that it DOES happen more often, but people should know their chances.

So, what are you formatting it as on linux? EXT4, btrfs, or XFS?

Bleeding edge fedora for very large file storage. Seems btrfs is finally ready for primetime with this drive when I pick it up.

THERE'S ALWAYS ONE.

Shucking is removing the hard drive from the enclosure to use it in PC or NAS (network attached storage) unit. I suspect the majority of people who purchase these shuck them. I also suspect WD knows this, and is happy to eat the cost of the enclosure in order to ensure they'll never have to service for warranty, as shucking voids the warranty (generally speaking).
Yea because it's so easy to google but people are lazy.

Yes if they argue you argue back and they will accept the return, but they will still tell you it's a "one time thing" or some such. They have to prove that the drive died because of what you did to it and they know it. It doesn't stop them from lying to you though. I used my Costco credit card to get free 2 year extended warranties with them as well!

No.. no it's not. sadly due to writing the code before there was a solid design. For example this just happened: https://lists.alpinelinux.org/~al...otto.de%3E

Friends don't let friends use BTRFS.

You're incorrect on the 4 bay nas needing 2 drives for redundancy.
Only 1 drive is used for redundancy. You can even mix and match drive sizes when you upgrade later.

https://www.synology.com/en-us/su...calculator

Play with that.

Get a Synology that can use BTFS and configure their hybrid raid. 4x8tb will yield 24tb usable. They have 6bay and 8bay models. I just picked up a 1618+ 6 bay for $500 on amazon warehouse. upgrading my DS416play 4 bay. Off to ebay it goes

Again: I agree with you in principle and I wish more people would do what you do--but most people (especially here) AREN'T willing to go through that, which is why I try to delineate between data hoarders and normal people. I donate regularly to the legal funds of people who do what you're describing, but normal people are just trying to live their lives so I modulate my advice based on what I think someone's asking about in practical terms.

In for 2. I noticed that they have "limit 1". So I placed 2 orders and both went through.

I'm glad that the 12TB ones from previous deal went out-of-stock. B&H Photo usually mirrors the Best Buy deals (and no tax if you use their Paybo card), but they show both the 12TB and this 14TB OOS.

Chase Freedom Visa has 5% cashback on Paypal. Rak10 has nothing on a BB disk.

Just sounding out the warning bells again. BTRFS is not safe. A 40TB linux mirror site went down because BTRFS ate itself and could not be repaired. At this point ext/xfs is safer, but if you want real protection use ZFS. It's far less flexible but it won't eat your data which is a welcome exchange, for me at least. We have many people on IRC with data loss horror stories from btrfs.

With all large drives, isn't it time to move on to ports with higher transfer speeds such as thunderbolt
