Uhaul Insurance on a 400 mile move

3,762 248 October 31, 2020 at 07:59 AM
Going to move my daughter's apartment belongings from our town to another town (one-way 400 miles). I'm going to need a 10' truck. I've driven this size truck in the past as well as a Penske 16' foot truck. I'm debating on which insurance to get. The SafeMove is around $60 and the SafeMove Plus is twice that amount. It looks like the big difference is the $1 million in liability between the SafeMove and SafeMove Plus. Any suggestions on if I should spend twice the cost just to get the extra liablity? I'm a very safe driver and have experience driving these trucks...thanks!

Check your own insurance policy; it may cover you for the rental, or at least the excess.

Safe trip!

Sorry...I should have mentioned that...my insurance WILL NOT cover moving trucks.

If you crash into a Mercedes with a million dollar art piece in trunk you will need the higher liability insurance.

I thought about that....never know what could happen especially since the one-way move is 400 miles. Might be worth it to get the SafeMove Plus. Now if it was just a local move I'd forego the Plus.

Either route you decide, just be sure to check for deals or coupon codes that you can use to offset the price of the insurance. I do believe the Safemove Plus is twice the price as Safemove. A good rule of thumb is that it's better to have too much and not need it then to need it and not have enough. Go with YOUR instinct. Slickdeals wouldn't be my recommended place to look for advise on things like this. Call Uhail, go over facts and figures and decide for yourself. Hope this helps is some way.

You might contact your insurance company to see if you could pay to get coverage through them. It might be much cheaper.

Found a good article on the internet that is written by a neutral source. It says that if you are making a longer move it would be best to get the Safemove Plus.

Does your CC cover it? AmEx offers auto insurance for rentals.... not sure about moving vans though.

There seem to be exclusions for moving vans/trucks on many types of usual insurance policies. If I were worried I'd probably just try to get a rider from my usual insurance company rather than trust whatever company Uhaul uses.
