How loud are these in operation? I have a seagate that's extremely clacky in operation.

Placed a order through NewEgg with no tax on it. Trying to decide if it's worth cancelling for basically $5 off.

the 12tb and 14tb are rather quiet, BUT, it greatly changes if you put it on a surface that resonates. Nothing clanky out of the drive, but as it writes, it can resonate on a desk that is less solid stable. I have a couple on the floor cement and I don't here them just a couple feet from where I sit. I also have another 3 of them on my desk, ontop of a flat power adapter box, and this hollow box makes them resonate a sound when they write. I like them on my desk, but maybe will move them off to make space. The sound is NOT clanky, and not at all bothersome, as I actually like it. I know when they are active.

Thanks! Turns out I'm so used to building computers with internal drives, I forgot about putting the drive on something that doesn't resonate. Seagates still pretty scratchy (i believe they are using enterprise drives inside, have not shucked it yet), but its at least a lot quieter.

My experience with Toshiba Hitachi and WD have been good. I dont know who owns who, as they have mostly merged somehow, but Maxtor(older news) and Seagates have been less lucky with my expereince. I have a server room with about 50+ drives.

I concur they are very quiet with two exceptions, (1)on a hard resonating surface, to fix it put a thick mouse pad under, (2)if you use active SMART monitoring on an ongoing basis it will make annoying vibrations.

I have a bunch of 4TB & 8TB disks...….sitting in a shelf. Not to mention 360GB and 500GB and even a couple of 2TB disks.

The golden rule of disk drives is "Bigger is better." I keep filling up disks and have to either add another disk to the case or get a larger disk and have the same number of disks in the case.

If you are going to spend ~$150 you are better off buying the recent and upcoming BF $190 14TB deal.

At 10TB capacity, this external should've already been $120 by now.

Or maybe the $27516TBdeal for an enterprise-class drive.
Curious regarding "Upcoming BF deal" where?
Not finding on Google or SD search through threads.

It was costing them to much given that the junk they put out now (all HD manufacturers..not WD specifically) unless it's an enterprise or NAS drive typically doesn't last 3 years. (there of course will be exceptions but it's not like the old days where a drive would last so long you'd move it to the new computer when you purchased one.

Last year this was nearly the same deal. I'm not the primary on Amazon Prime, but I have Amazon Prime. I also have an Amazon visa card. I called about this 10% cashback, and the Amazon rep assured me that I would 100% get the cashback.

Well, I bought 6 of these!! The deal was 15% cashback. I got only 3% cashback. 12% was something like $100 cashback that I wasn't going to get. I spoke to several Amazon reps and asked them to check the transcript.

Long story short, I was irritated and returned all of them...

Morale of the story is if you're not the primary on your Amazon prime account, you may get screwed like I did.

How much did it come to on NewEgg ($149.99 I guess :-). With NY tax it was

Item(s) Subtotal:$149.99
Shipping & Handling:$0.00
-----
Total before tax:$149.99
Estimated tax to be collected:$12.00
-----
Grand Total:$161.99
Less %10 would be 161.99-14.99=$147.00 (Stupid NY)
