I got this offer via email today on my Discover IT card. Even though it says it can't be combined with any other offers, my guess is that it will still work with the "Sign up for Sam's Club, get a $45GC free" deal currently going on, since all Discover sees is that you paid $45 for a membership.
However, Discover's offer says it may take up to 3 months for the credit to appear after the deal ends, so we may not know for sure until 3/31.
Worst case scenario, it's still essentially a free one-year membership. It seems likely to me, however, that it'll be a free membership AND $45. Guess we'll see.
Why can't I simply buy a $45 gc using this. How does discover knows I signed up or used the $45 on something else
It might work, but it just depends on how they process the payment. If the membership processes through the same system as buying stuff, then you're probably fine. But if the membership desk is separate and shows as something like SAMS MEMBERSHIP SERVICES then the credit may only trigger if that's the seller.
If you shop at sam's enough that buying a $45 gift card is basically just prepaying for your next trip, you can always guy the gift card and see if it triggers (a lot of cards send you an email when an offer triggers even if the credit takes a while, or you can call them) and if it doesnt work, you're no worse off.
But I wouldn't treat it as automatic - especially not online. lots of sites have separate systems when you buy gift cards online. The Nordstrom credit for Amex Platinum works for gift cards in store but not online for example.
OP, click on the link at the end of the email and copy the address of what will open, it will probably have offer number in the actual url or some such. Or do a right click on the link and copy link address, please.
It's a very specific email with unique keys. Doesn't even require a log in so I'm not sure there is a path to it other than receiving the email.

If you're going to do it, be sure to account for tax depending on your state:
