People who use Ring as a security system, use the Ring hub itself (the siren) but I guess that this is for people who just want to use the doorbell and lights/cameras. If you have an other hub like smartthings then RIng devices can be used with those as well. this is basically just a hub for people that want to use the devices but don't have another hub already.
Dedicated protocols for Smart devices like zigbee and z-wave are focused on speed, security and accuracy. Wifi is slower and less reliable and adds to your network device congestion. Also, these devices support a mesh architecture that makes each device add to the overall network range, reliability and fallback ability.
Even if you have the Ring Security System, you will need this to use their Lighting products, outdoor motion detectors AND their new mailbox detector.

So this smart lighting bridge is needed to add ring smart lights? Without them they wont work? What other functions does it have ccx an you add non ring lights with it, and control them through ring app?

Dang it...bought this quickly because i was not going to be available for a few hours before reading up. Misunderstood when i quickly read description. I already have ring hub so no need for this..cant cancel. Thought this would give me some additional capabilities.

I'm surprised they haven't built this into the new echo.

you can buy the outside lighting transformer and bridge kit right now for $83. the transformer alone is $99 and the bridge is 19. so, you are saving around $37.

I don't like this bridge thing, everything should be over wifi, not a bridge or hub

Great timing!!!! Thanks op. My Ring mailbox sensor just arrived today and this bridge will be paired with the mailbox sensor so that it can record the moment the mailbox is opened with the supported Ring products like Ring doorbell, floodlight, etc. Not a lot of people are interested in this new product by Ring, but I find it to be very useful since I've been noticing people opening my mailbox ( I put the window sensor from the Ring alarm monitoring system ) to notify my phone. Now with this bridge, i can see who opens my mailbox.

Just bought one of these with the solar lighting package during the Prime Day deals. Can never get it to connect... called Ring and they barely let me explain what was happening before they decided to send out a replacement. Still have the same problem with the new Bridge, can't get past the "is it flashing blue" part of installation. I have 4 Ring cameras around my house so I figured this would be an easy add. Now I have to send all of these lights back along with the Bridge.
