Usually if you pay a set fee or load prepaid account to certain amount (for Moto E4 year ago it was $75 fee or $100 loaded to account balance in which it was activated). Might be more or less now. It will show conditions on the retail box on its back.
But even then some had issues with Verizon blacklisting device after a month I think, although it was possible to sort it out.
How can you be sure that it will be auto-unlocked (without making a call to Verizon) after 60 days? Can I just use one month of Verizon prepaid service and it will get unlocked after 60 days?

From past experience, it won't work on postpaid until it's unlocked.
These come locked and will become unlocked after 60 days of it being activated on Verizon.
