I was looking for a decent phone deal that doesn't require a change in service or a trade-in. I'm on a grandfathered 15GB AT&T shared plan, which works well for me, and all of our phones are pretty old. So I couldn't benefit from any of the previously posted deals since:
  • I don't want to switch to an Unlimited plan
  • I don't have any sexy phones to trade-in
  • I don't want to deal with bill credits
Today, I bought a Samsung A71 5G for $9.97/mo for 30 months. It required a line that is eligible for an upgrade, but it didn't ask to change my service. The upgrade fee is $30, but I will call to see if AT&T can void it since I have a corporate discount. I paid sales tax on the discounted price. Overall, I think it's a good deal for those who don't need the latest and greatest phone every year and don't need the bells and whistles of the Unlimited plan.

Here are the phone specs from GSM Arena [gsmarena.com].

Good deal. Do you have the phone already? Did it have a pre-installed screen protector?

Seems like a pretty solid deal if you still use postpaid these days. I'm kinda liking Sammy's midrange lineup. Bigger batteries and they're finally starting to wise up and use plastic backs instead of glass. Maybe since they're using plastic backs again they can go back to user replaceable batteriesSmilieSmilie

The only options listed during the check-out were:
  • $9.97/mo for 30 months
  • $89.90 down + lower monthly payments for 30 month
  • $9.97/mo + some monthly fee for Next

"Requires 30 month 0% APR installment agreement, qualifying credit and qualifying service plan.
Service: Eligible postpaid voice & data service is required and extra.
Min. $60/mo. before discount for new customers.
Existing customers can add to eligible current post-paid plans which may be less."

Looks like you're agreeing to another 30 month service contract also. $60+/month plan for new customers.

Update Edit: The only signature program plan you can get with this deal is their unlimited elite plan.

Update #2: Grandfathered unlimited plans (2015 - 2017) are not eligible either. AT&T forces you to upgrade your plan to one of their current ones.

I give up. Neither AT&T device is eligible.

Just a heads up, if you're not on one of the current unlimited plans, you won't be able to get 5G service for your 5G phone. Older mobile share and older unlimited plans don't get 5G access

Good point! I wasn't looking specifically for a 5G phone. Just a solid mid-range with decent specs. But good to know.

Well they have use plastic backs because you won't be able to do wireless charging. Glass backs is necessary for wireless charging. Replaceable batteries, just carry a mophie or something works almost the same way, especially since all phones have PD (power delivery) capabilities.

Nexus 5 and Samsung galaxy so were both plastic phones with wireless charging. METAL phones are not able to wirelessly charge. Plastic is perfectly compatible of wireless charging. Sonicare toothbrushes are plastic and use wireless charging.

I have the Verizon A71 5G UW and it is very nice, good battery life and performance, nice screen, only difference is the Verizon version has 8GB of RAM and Ultra-Wideband 5G support.

Just did the TMO deal for this phone, trading in a super old Kyocera phone that's running JellyBean, I found a few years ago. Doubt I can get $10 for it on eBay, but Samsung will give me $75 credit for it along w/ a Slickdeals instant $100 off, a few other discounts that brought the total down to $169. No add'l lines, no contracts, just a straight up trade, don't even need to be a TMO customer. If you have more current phones like S7 and newer or iPhone 6 or newer, you'll get more credit for the Trade in, bringing your total even less than the $169 I paid. They'll even take cracked glass phones depending which it is. Oh and I got $50 credit from Samsung that should come in 30 days or so and 10% cash back from a certain c/b site. There's zero interest payment options too, didn't really look into it, but the threads here, just search A71 5G, threads over a hundred pages long, can't miss it.
