Well, in California, these items have been making an appearance [eater.com] here and there:

- 18% Service Fee for a buffet
- 5% Kitchen Charge
- 3-5% healthcare charge
- Carbon offset charge

UberEats/GrubHub/DashPass/etc. exist to make money, just like any other for-profit business. Those service fees are that. It costs a lot to run a service that coordinates such intricate and time-sensitive delivery operations, and that's before you get into expected losses/chargebacks for screwups from either the drivers or the restaurants. For reference, before COVID, Uber was hoping to have its first profitable quarter [forbes.com] ever this year (forecast since adjusted to sometime next year).

Whether they charge you a direct service fee, the restaurant passes along the cost they pay as increased item prices, or both, this is the cost of having one service that can deliver food from dozens of places to you. The economics are entirely different than a restaurant having dedicated delivery drivers (like pizza chains or local places that have a limited delivery area).

There are entirely valid reasons to not use any of these service (I personally don't use UberEats for service-related reasons), but them charging money for providing a service should be expected.
It's perfectly okay they want to make money but pricing transparency needs to be in place.
The menu prices are inflated because they charge the restaurants large fees(usually 15%-30%) on top of charging consumers a service fee. Nowhere in the app says the prices could be different from menu prices if you order directly. If you care to do the math it's often like you would be paying $11-$12 in fees for $30 worth of food, plus taxes. Those prices also apply to pick-up orders which is really crazy high. It's unbelievable that they still lose money every quarter despite charging such a high % of fees. Something is very wrong with the business model.

I was excited but decided not to order. It is like BOGO. After $10off then service and tip = worse than BOGO.

Ordered $11 and come out $7.xx. LoL. Without $10 off $18.xx.

not even worth it . you order a drink for 5.75 you enter the code in which offsets the cost . But then you have all the fees that get tacked on top which comes out to $6.96 which cost more than the actual drink lol

It's worth it since you don't have to drive to the location and the person bring it's to you. But downside the coffee might get cold when it gets to you.

Do you tip your pizza delivery driver? What's the difference?
nah dont believe in tips. Im japanese and in japan its rude to tip. I dont understand why in america people tip companies should be obligated to pay their workers more or even enough for driving. Im pretty sure uber makes alot of money even starbucks.

Also why doesnt the person making the drink get a tip only the person bringing the drink....
I work as a healthcare worker i dont get tips for saving people lives.
