R-SIM is a SIM card add-on that looks like a really thin SIM card that mounts on top of your nano sim (or below depending on the model) that allows you to bypass the sim lock by hard coding a new ICCID that is unlocked.

You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.

It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.

Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.

back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.

As long as you have an old Sprint SIM card laying around (they're reusable)... and an IMEI from a phone that's compatible with Sprint's network, you can sign up for the $5 service (data only) or if you want to play it safe... $6 service (500mb data, 100 min). Pay for service, enter in IMEI and SIM card info, activate. You'll have instant access to a new phone number, pin to access port out info.

anyone have ideas on what to do with all the numbers? I'd hate to just let them disappear, but don't plan on keeping any of them for 6 months. Maybe port them into somewhere else haha? or does the number need to "stay" on cricket even without a phone?
Hold on to them in case a port in deal comes along.
You never know
Bad thing is that the major carriers are requiring the 24/30 month bill credits.

not sure that will work out for you unless you want to keep metropcs for a while. Says you will only get $200 after 3rd months payment. So maybe you'd pocket $40? lot of work IMO, but could work
$10 SIM + $30x3 mos service = $100. $100 profit.

totally agree, but many of the ebay sellers say "only guaranteed to work for 30 days"

Interesting idea. What happens when I cancel the $60 plan I ported the phone in on? They just cancel the sim and the phone stayed locked to cricket? That's perfect if that's the case since as you suggested I'd have swapped in her current sim
you don't really have to cancel it.
I would just activate it.
Be sure you do not do Auto pay.
Since you are already on cricket, you can do the swap.

You have a grandfathered plan and you really don't want to risk any changes on that.
I have read in the past (iPhone 8 cricket deal) where people had issues with the ports and they were porting out their main numbers and had to go through a bunch of hoops to get things resolved.

The only issue you may encounter is that cricket sees you as a customer already and they MIGHT cancel your new order. But it seems like you have been with them for a while.

correct, meaning 30 days to port out of boost.
So you are with cricket, you are good until you stop paying your bill and they cancel your service.

You can get on the $30 per month plan, It says you will receive the code after 75 days. So you will spend $90 and net $110 profit. Worst case if you stay put for 4 months, you will still spend $120 and net $80 profit

Got it- so the play would be to activate the phones, downgrade the plan to $30, so atleast you get 60 days to keep port numbers, even if you don't plan on keeping cricket. appreciate the help

If you plan to unlock , stay put on cricket. Otherwise try to look for some other port in deals. I will be moving mine to $200 metropcs deal
I was thinking of doing that.
Did you port from boost?
If so, would boost numbers be considered tmobile numbers, which metro pcs is a part of?

If so, it won't work for us who did the boost port ins.

correct.
If you did 2 lines on one account, you downgrade to the $30 plan but now you only have a $30 credit. So you would have to pay an extra $30 IF you want to keep both lines open for the 2nd month

I hope I made sense.

I thought you need to generate referral before activating the phone, not before phone order date.

Maybe my question will be answered when I start going thru the process but the ad says I need to activate a $60 plan when I order the phone to get that price. Obviously I don't want that 2nd plan, so intend on cancelling the $60 plan as soon as I have the phone and activate it. Then swap in the sim from my MILs phone. Wasn't sure what the consequence would be once that plan is deactivated. Not a chance I'm not messing with my grandfathered plan.

I haven't done this yet, but my guess is it should work. All they care is about the current carrier and it won't show as boost, but At&t on their end. I moved my numbers from Verizon, so I guess I will be fine anyways. Good luck!

correct, the $60 plan is required to get the iPhone SE for $50.
So you are at $110.
Have both the plan and phone in your cart and wait a few minutes on the cart page, a pop up with a $20 discount should appear. Apply that and you are down to $90 or so (taxes)

Once you get the phone, you can put her sim in it and use the new SE.

edit:
from user mnsrulz:
In case u don't want to wait for the popup here's the code to apply C205HG3HKSUA
