It's their linear compressors in french-door and side-by-side styles, that are prone to failure. I just bought a french door fridge and avoided LG for this reason, but this top/bottom LG uses different components and should be clear of that.
"A class action lawsuit has been filed against LG Electronics alleging a defect is causing some of its fridges to stop cooling.
The refrigerators at issue contain linear compressors, which were supposedly meant to make the fridges more reliable and durable. For many consumers, however, the refrigerators have stopped working within 36 months of use in what one news outlet calls a "pandemic of dying fridges."
Best Buy has it for the same price as HD and they offer free installation, you have to make sure you select that option in the check out process ( They have free delivery as an option too so don't get confused, click on installation which should be priced at $0).
I'm also in the market for a side-by-side refrigerator. All compressor issues I read are with LG.
Do the Samsung ones also have the same issues?
Samsung has the ice maker issue but I think that is just confined to their french door fridges. This may be due to the ice maker dispenser being on the refrigerator side, whereas in a side by side it is in the freezer side.

I have a Samsung with this issue, the fix is so simple that I can't believe they haven't come up with a permanent fix, probably difficult to do it for manufacturing.
All it takes is some RTV silicon along the seams. There are gaps that allow condensation to build up and free eventually it will freeze up the entire ice maker.

I did the fix and haven't had any issues.
