Looking for a new tablet/PC as I only have a desktop. I don't want a chromebook or anything. Is this unit pretty good? I read if you go this route you should pay the extra for the i5

This is a good deal. I'm debating whether to get it though. The Surface Pro 8 will be out within six months (maybe in early 2021 already actually). That will have Intel's 11th generation chip set with Thunderbolt 4 support (hopefully). The 11th gen intel integrated GPU (called Intel Xe graphics) has 2x the graphics speed. And Thunderbolt 4 will allow you to dock an external GPU if you need that. If you don't, the Surface Pro 7 is a nice device. I have owned three Surface Pros, and they are unbeatable if you travel a lot.

Don't hold your breath for thunderbolt, Microsoft is against it for security reasons.

I mean, yeah really u wanna shoot for the i5 but I ran an i3 for "every day tasks" for years with very few complaints. That lenovo was 8, 9 years old before I retired it a year or two ago. An i3, a solid state, and 8gb of RAM is fine for most every day use items

Yeah i3 is definitely acceptable for tasks assuming it's a recently made i3 and you definitely need 8gb plus for ram and 128gb for storage minimum regardless. I have a cheap old Asus transformer book and it run so slow with 4gb and 64gb storage. These are decent prices and aren't necessarily worth it.

These are same prices from last year, they haven't gone down.
