These are non-4k and do not come with a remote. The new Google chromecast TV is best option at $50

Depends. This can only do 1080p and doesn't have a remote with user interface. You'd need another device (i.e. smartphone or computer) to control your media. I would not get this personally because the 4K Firestick and 4K capable Roku stick are roughly only $10 more and offer better performance. The main benefit of this vs those two options is the option to stream videos from a Chrome browser to your TV, which is nice for when you're streaming something online on your computer but want to watch it on your TV without having to deal with cables. If that's something you really want then this is a cool device for that, but if you're patient, I'd suggest waiting to see if the Chromecast with Google TV goes on sale. It can stream 4K and comes with a remote and Android OS, so you can download a lot of different apps.

Thanks for sharing the alternative. I went ahead and ordered the google mini along with Chromecast for 18.99 free shipping.
This post misstates the shipping info with Google. It's charging 9.99 for ground shipping, no free shipping.

The remote is entirely the point for so many of us. I hate having to have every single app on my phone in order to watch things and have to go through each of them one by one by one forever looking for something to watch. The remote and more importantly the Google TV software installed give me everything in one place, a beautiful tv menu I don't have to use my phone for. Plus, you can still cast exactly as before if you like so nothing has been removed and the price is unbelievably good for all you get. How is adding functionality a scam?

You got that right exactly. If you wanted to cast, then don't buy the Android TV version, just get the previous one as it does that perfectly.

If what you want to do is use Android TV, install all kinds of different streaming apps, and be able to use the remote, without using your phone at all, that's when you want to buy that version.

It's a good deal, yes. But not everyone needs a netflix subscription, at least not for my case. My best friend lets me use his NF for free, so pointless for me to get it myself.
