Discounted from 169.99, this is supposed to be comparable to the kindle oasis but is not locked into amazon. It also uses overdrive so you can borrow epub books from your local library for free. White is available too

Holy Crap, my first post and it makes it to the frontpage, and on Thanksgiving Smilie

The previous commenter may have been a bit hyperbolic in his criticisms of the oasis but goodereader is not a good source of information. They have been known for putting bad info out to draw traffic too their site, and I've found that their reviews have a clear bias. Trust me, I researched the hell out of both devices before buying them and saw all that they had to say. The mobileread forums are the place to go for in depth user experiences.
The Libra is a worse hardware device than the Oasis.

- Slower processor
- Worse Contrast
- Much more uneven lighting (including a weird light bar on one side)
- Recessed infrared touchscreen
- Very plasticy build

This worse hardware also is true for the Forma, which has all of these same faults except for the touchscreen which is a normal capacitive. The Forma does have one possible advantage which is a bigger screen.

But the Kobo devices run much better software than the Oasis. The reader allows for much more fine grained adjustment of fonts and page layout. It has Pocket support. You can also hack them to get additional features and other reader software like KOReader.

So it really depends on what you care more about: better software or better hardware.
You're apparently not very well-versed in the e-reader ecosystem if you think Kobo ones are knock-offs.

I like mine, the only thing i wish it had was an ambient light sensor. I like to turn off the backlight when I'm outside or indoors during the day. Once night arrives you won't be able to see the screen without turning a lamp on first to turn the backlight back on.

Just FYI, you can upload other formats to a kindle. if you change the file extension from epub to txt, you can just send the file to your kindle email and it will show up in readable form.

Just load your books into Caliber. Converts to your specific kindle format. Can email books or load via USB

Caliber rocks. It has a ton of features, but worth having even if you only use it for format conversions.

I use Calibre regularly to convert books I buy from Amazon to read on my Kobo Aura One [medium.com].

Is the Kobo really as good as the Kindle?

Is there any way to email books directly to a Kobo? I have a ton of books in calibre, and I can email them to a Kindle. I can also send them to my mom's gmail to open on her phone. Does Kobo have this option, or would I need to physically have the reader with me? My mom is across the country and she isn't tech savvy, so I'm trying to find the most convenient option for her.

I believe you can use Dropbox with this. And if you're using the Kobo app it syncs across devices
