Anyone have a recommendation for a plex server under $350? I have a qnap ts-451+ but I think it's dying (just got it out of storage for the first time in a year and half and even after replacing the thermal paste it takes 5+ minutes to just open apps and then freezes/crashes them.

I upgraded the ram to 16GB. Paid $399 plus the memory upgrade.


I've been pleased with it. As for it running hot, I guess it would depend on your workload. I just needed something to sip power and run different internet to ham (Amateur) radio gateway applications. So, I've not even noticed the fan running.

btw you can upgrade to 64gb of ram even though it is stated that 32gb is the limit. i needed 64gb to act as a buffer instead of using the ssd

If it's only a few streams check out the Nvidia Shield Pro. Tons of uses

Almost any old desktop will make a good plex server if you're willing to DIY. Tons of good tutorials out there.

Thanks for the information. I did not need that much ram in it. 16gb, and performance monitor shows 3.8gb in use. (which leaves some overhead and 9.7Gb cached)

I've seen a $400 8gb 7th gen i5 one from TD; i liked the price and the vertical stand on that one. But specs are meh.
