Keep in mind Lenovo, JBL, and LG smart displays run a proprietary app made by their respective company in Android Studio using google APIs and Android Things OS. Sometimes they're better, sometimes they're worse. But it's not the same UI as Nest Hub software, which is Google developed.
I have this and it sounds much better than my 8" Lenovo smart display and 7" Nest Hub.

With proper placement, this display can sound really good. Don't get me wrong, it's not going to sound like a proper 2.1 stereo setup with a dedicated amplifier but if you're looking for a well rounded kitchen display that also has a solid sound setup with Google built in, this is it.

This is exactly what we use ours for. We listen to podcasts, we have a photo gallery app that rotates through Google photos, and use it for video calls with Google duo. And yes, it sounds great. We also have a nest cam, and it displays who's at the door. We also can control or smart lights by voice or on the touch screen. This is an awesome price.

Are any of them less... limited? We want to get something for the mother-in-law to use in the kitchen, but without pinterest it's worthless. I'm thinking we need a full-on tablet.

Spec for spec (audio wise), yes the JBL will out perform the Google Hub. That being said, I think you can find the hub for $50 right now. If you want a solid sounding display get the JBL. If you don't care about sound, get the $50 Google Hub 7''.

The JBL is now almost identical to google displays in function.
