Editor's Notes & Price Research

  • These have the latest headband, which is not only much softer, more comfy but does not rely on rubber tension for clamp, so it should be much more reliable. It also comes in a new color and box is marked Adorama exclusive.
  • Great price at $30 less than a recent Frontpage deal. -johnny_miller

my 2 cents.
don't get it.
not because this is not a good deal or those are bad headphones, but because you may find out that you are wasting your money for the following 3 reasons.
1. HIFI means different things to different people. it is a overused terms that lost its original meaning. you may be surprised to find out that none of those expensive headphone have a flat frequency response curve. audio companies tends to add their special touch to color their music and create their unique profiles. (the worst offender is BOSE and Beats, but also applies to Beyerdynamic, Sennheise and Audeze). if you looking for a pair of headphone to audit your music (as you are a musician), you should look for MONITORS not HIFI gears. start with the industry standard, the Sony V6 or 7506 for less than 50 dollars. you want to find the flaw in your music so you can fix them, not something to help you to cover up those flaws. i can tell you for sure that 3 of my most expensive headphones all color their music (T1 Gen 1, HD800 and LCD2)

2. high end HIFI gears often requires amps, especially true for planar. expect to pay lot for a good amp. remember just because you got a Ferrari as gift, doesn't mean you should expect maintenance of the car to be as economical as a Honda civic. this is a 800 dollar headphone, and their target audience is expected to have decent amp. plug those to your iphone or PC will actually make it sound worse than most 50 to 100 dollar headphone. also, the target audience is expect to live with the inconvenience of running DAC and AMP, and their power supplies, and headphone wires and cables. you may find this experience to be thrilling the first time you do it, but unless you really into it, you will find those equipment will sit on the shelf and collecting dust while you ended up using airpod 100% of time. imagine you are sitting on the coach with your iphone connected to a DAC with a USB cable, and a DAC connect to AMP with balanced audio cable, and then your AMP goes to you headphone. each one of them has their dedicated power supply and together weights 5 lbs.

3. planar are unique but doesn't necessaries mean they are one size fits all. for example. they are not a great choice for things like POP and Rock, certainly not heavy metal, and you may find a pair of Sony or Bose sounds much likeable. planar are a specialty item. AFAIK, no one's first pair of high end headphone are planar. you start with something that is somewhat jack of all trades that work with or without AMP. see if you can live with those inconvenience, and go from there before investing in the entire system.
The Hifimans, no question. After experiencing planar magnetics, I can't go back to traditional dynamic drivers.

You do want a decently powerful headphone amp to get the most out of these, though.

Got the gen 2. Plan on getting rid of it. My atom amp just doesnt do this justice. Itndoes an amazing job on the he400i however. Ive heard that it requires balanced connections. Perhaps thats my issue?
Also has ticked me off since i got them, one of the channels cuts out, due to a bad cable.

No they sound quite different than the sundara. My dad has the 400i and i have some oppo planars. I've heard most of the hifimans to the he6, 1000, ananda, susvara, and i actually like the 560 best. Still waiting to try the Deva bt before deciding on one.

Tier wise by price, they are between the 400 and 560, but the sound signature is quiet different than the sundara where the 560 sounds like a more robust 400.

Just as an aside,
after using the 400i for years, my initial impression is that the Sundara is a significant upgrade in clarity and punchiness, as well as bass extension (even before burn-in). My main point of reference is the mid-lower-end Grado's that I went through early in my headphone listening career, and the Sundara moved closer to that in terms of transient response/signature/excitement.

Fyi, I'm using the Dekoni Elite sheepskin pads, so the stock Sundaras may indeed be quite different.

The Hifimans, no question. After experiencing planar magnetics, I can't go back to traditional dynamic drivers.

You do want a decently powerful headphone amp to get the most out of these, though.
