The vast majority of laptops aren't made by the name brand. This includes HP, Dell, Lenovo, and yes even Apple doesn't make the Macs. They're made by companies you've probably never heard of called ODMs - original design manufacturers. They're like an OEM, but they also design the product in addition to manufacturing it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lis...rers_(ODMs)

There are three ODMs you may have heard of. Acer used to be an ODM, before they spun off their ODM division as Wistron. Asus used to be an ODM, before they spun off their ODM division as Pegatron (the same guy owns both and has a thing for pegasus). And Foxconn isn't a laptop ODM, but they've been in the news a lot because Apple blames everything bad about the iPhones on them, while taking credit for all the good things.

So the fact that there's a new player in the laptop game (Walmart or Gateway or EVOO) doesn't really tell you much. They can just hire an ODM to make the laptop for them, and it'll immediately be on-par with something you can get from the recognized brands. Even the Macs (they're made by Quanta, who also makes laptops for just about every other brand out there). About the only thing the name brand tells you is what kind of aftermarket support to expect.

Laptops which I suspect are actually made by the name brand include the Thinkpads (Lenovo bought the building and employees where they were designed and manufactured from IBM) and the higher-end Samsungs (they make a lot of the components like screen, SSD, RAM, so there's not much for them to gain by outsourcing the design to an ODM).
Wow, they hated a laptop with 2GB of ram, I'm SHOCKED!! EEK!

Give me a break, you can't compare a junk $140 laptop with 2GB of ram to this with an i5 and 16GB, apples and oranges I'd say. Plus this has a 1080p screen, most laptops at this price point are junk 768's.
I'm outside circuit city waiting for it to open. Going to snag one now.

Good deal. Haven't used a Gateway in 20+ years. Too bad it doesn't have a backlit keyboard though.

Yeah, evoo gaming laptops were some of the best price to performance in 2020.

I don't know about these laptops though. The point is they have made good laptops and not all bad.

I think the issues people have with junk manufacturers are hardware fit and finish and long term reliability issues, not specs on paper.

How does this not have 1000 thumbs up? Seems like an insane deal based on the specs.

This is good deal and lowest price so far this holidays for relatively better config. I think they had similar 14" for $399 on a different thread on SD which is expired now.

BTW CHASE signature credit card 💳 has 5% cashback for Walmart so you can save another $20 on top. Rocking deal for $380 👍🏼👍🏼

Good luck!

The track pads are bad on a lot of these. And there may be zero support, so add a third party warranty and buy with a credit card that extends the mfg warranty.

A so-so review of this laptop, but at this price point it's worth a look.

Use Costco Citicard if you have one, as it extends the manufacturer warranty by 2 years.
