If your subscription ends soon it might be better to wait for the subscription to end, add gold, then convert back to ultimate as that will convert your remaining time as gold into ultimate. I could be wrong though.

Yeah, that downgrade to upgrade jank is what I've heard, too. I'm due in March, but I'm really just trying to hold out until I can get my hands on a Series X with Xbox All Access

4 months only? So $50 for 4 months of GPU after conversion vs the $20 for 3 months of GPU that I've been buying... Doesn't seem like a good deal to buy and convert.

If you have never been subscribed to Ultimate then yes, your Xbox Live Gold will convert 1:1 to Game Pass Ultimate. Just be sure to add Gold first then add the $1 trial offer for Ultimate. This I'm sure of as I've done this myself.

There are a lot of these posts on SD but I believe there was a recent one for two years of Gold (from Costco maybe?) and I recall seeing at least a couple of comments indicating that you are able to repeat the deal if your sub expires.

From that thread, it won't be a dollar for the trial, more like $15. But the 1:1 conversion still works.
