More significant or frequent heartburn - OTC omeprazole (Prilosec) 20mg (1 capsule) taken 30 minutes before breakfast, on a daily (not as needed basis).
Rationale for taking prior to eating is that PPI is first absorbed into blood stream (packaged as an enteric coated pro drug) then localizes to the acid secreting cells (secretory canaliculi of parietal cells, where it is protonated and trapped). Eating stimulates gastric acid secretion (food buffers acid, vagal inputs from act of eating and fundic distension), at which point the PPI irreversibly binds to the pump.
If you are male and have chronic (>5 yrs) or frequent (> weekly) heartburn, and at least 2 of the following, you should have a one time upper endoscopy to check for precancerous changes of esophagus (Barretts): age >50, caucasian, central obesity, tobacco use, family history of Barretts or esophageal cancer.

Also I would never take a PPI, prilosec OTC ruined my life.
